Jim Jefferies vs. Max Schmeling

Schmelling by late stoppage. Better offensive arsenal, faster, stronger and more accurate puncher. Jeffries(as well as many guys back in the early 1990s) had no defense and i Scmelling having a field day with timing him coming in with the obvious counters. Jeffries had a great chin, but too many of those counters punches would crack it.

 

Eye cuts and cut ears have zero to do with how durable your chin is ,couldnt you find it in yourself to admit you were mistaken?What are you ? the resident boxing authority on here M? YOU WERE WRONG! It happens to us all,but most of us admit it.Scmeling was stopped ONCE AS IN KOD as a LH by the British Champion,a man he had beaten and took lightly in the return,his only other stoppages were by two of the greatest punchers,IF NOT THE GREATEST of all time. That doesnt add up to a suspect chin.My Fleischer source isnt form the Illustrated book of Boxing ,its from the History Of the Heavyweight Championship.The Revised addition.You quote one newspaper as your source for Munroes weight ,I quoted two researched books.Fleischer descibed the Munroe "bout " as "a howling farce".Something that might interest you M there is a foot note to the chapter on Jeffries,Fleischer states that Jeffries gave an interview to a RIng employee,Fleischer calls him[ "a representative of mine"],In FEb 1949,in which Jeffries stated that he did not agree to pass his title on to the winner of the Burns Hart bout,but that a fight promoter did so without his consent,using Jeffries name without permission.

The style that Schmeling seems to have been most adept against is pressure fighters.

Im fine Chris,just a little dissapointed,Mendoza posts some good stuff,but imo he lets himself down when he can't admit he is in error.

 

true character is defined in adverse situations when your down, not when your on top.

I've seen Schmeling fight and i believe he was better, but i don't know for sure.

Here's best and most honest analysing i can give you.

Reason why i believe Schmeling was better: he looks more athletic in pictures. Jeffries looked fat even in pictures taken in his prime.

 

Yes, and several of them, Louis, Stribling, and Risko, for example, were very durable.

I think Schmeling has a good chance of pounding Jeffries and eventually stopping him if Jeff can't figure out his style. Jeff could not fence with Schmeling, I think, but would come forward hard with a body attack. I judge it likely he would wear Schmeling down before Schmeling wore him out with those rights. This one would certainly be fun to see and probably, as Janitor posted, very brutal.

 

"Grace under pressure" as defined by Ernest Hemingway ,a rabid fight buff and Joe Louis fan. I have a terrific appraisal by Hemingway of Louis ,comparing him to Dempsey and finding him infinitely superior technically, I should post it.

 

What error? I pointed out lesser people stopped Schmeling 3 times ( twice by journeyman ) before Louis and Baer and then the excuse wagon came a rolling on in.

Cuts are part of a boxer’s durability. If you are not satisfied with that, than perhaps Schmeling is vulnerable to both TKO's from punches and cuts. That would make his chances even less. Wouldn’t you agree? I like to hear you comment on that.

As for Schemling chin, power punchers quickly hurt him and stopped in filmed fights. While Baer and Louis were top punchers, they did not need many good ones to get the job done. I have seen Louis and Baer land far more on others and take longer to stop them. Allow me to illustrate an example in filmed fights.

Max Baer hit Carnera ( who is not know for a good chin ) many times with hard shots.

Joe Louis unloaded on a shot version of Carnera many times until the TKO'd came after a beating in round 6.

Neither Louis nor Bear needed to land as many hard shots to stop Schemling.

So McVey, we have two punchers vs two different fighters. Based on these fights, the conclusion is Carnera took at least an even punch with Schmeling. In addition, Carnera was never blown away by journeyman.

The bottom line is this; you cannot claim Schmeling had a top chin. He did not. I could name 15 lineal champions that had better, and that was my main point.

 

Your error was in taking the facts at face value without bothering to check the circumstances of the stoppages.You saw three stoppages on Schmelings record and assumed he must be chinny.After Old Fogey produced the info that two of the stoppages were due to a cut ear and a cut eye ,you now make the fanciful claim that these reflect on schmelings durability,with that criteria we would have seen Jeffries stopped in some of his fights ,under more modern rules,does that mean he wasnt durable?Why must you spin the truth to fit your argument ,when I think you have a valid point I will acknowledge it ,you never admit the possibility that you are wrong,you demean yourself by it..
Schmeling went into the 10th round with baer ,in a fight many ringside observers and authors thought he was winning,he didnt fold early as you suggest.Max was past his prime when Louis kod him,but he still has that Louis ko on his record a far greater acheivment than any Jeffries accomplished.
Carnera was dropped by Sharkey a man who had a total of 13 kos on his record and by Gains a man you said wasnt a puncher, he was also kod twice by journeyman Leroy Haynes.I could easily say you cannot claim Jeffries had a top chin since he never met punchers of the calibre of Louis and Baer,and the best puncher he faced made his face into a gory mess and broke his nose,and he was a super middle weight 40 years old,by your logic that proves Jeffries wasnt durable.I never said Schmeling had a top chin the argument was that you said his chin was suspect against second tier punchers,I think that argument has been emhatically refuted on this forum.

 

So going by your own logic, vitali is not as durable as you think, since he is vunerable to cut stoppages considering he lost a fight on cuts.
