In his terrific biography of Jeffries, " In The Ring With Jim Jeffries",Adam Pollack mentions that Jeffries trained with a 350 pound heavybag and includes a photo of him doing so. After that one would have thought bulling the likes of Fitz and Corbett around would be like playing rough and tumble with your kids Is this the heaviest bag any fighter has ever utilised in training?
There is a rare film of Jeffries hitting the heavy bag. I have seen it. He jolts the bag like sonny Liston except Liston used lighter bags. In Jeffries day the bags were filled with sand.
Not sure. I seem to remember reading that Tyson was hitting a huge heavy bag at one point in his career, but I can't remember the weight. 350lbs is monstrous, though!
350 lbs is the heaviest I've ever heard being used. I have hit many a heavy bag in my time. Recently I hit a 250 pound bag with just a few punches. Not only did it barely move but my shoulders felt as if they were coming out of their sockets afterward. I'm 220 pounds and could not imagine hitting a bag like that regularly.
There's a guy on YouTube hitting a 500lb bag that looks pretty ludicrous. Surely there's a point where a bag is heavy enough? Where do you draw the line?
I had the same experience. Back in the 80s at the North Dallas Boxing Club they had a large leather bag that I think was 300 pounds. My thought before hitting was I would develop really good power by hitting it. It was sort of like hitting a padded concrete wall, where your shoulder joints to the brunt of the impact. Need less to say it didn't take long for realize this was not good for me.
I don’t think that Jeffries used this 350 pound bag as a punch bag. I think that he moved it around, to improve his strength in the clinches.
