My understanding is that Jeffries did this for some of his earlier title defenses, but that he had abandoned the practice by the time of the Munro fight.

In the run up to the Munro fight, he said that he had abandoned the practice, and thought himself a better fighter for it!

He took on different trainers for the Johnson fight, so perhaps they had a more backward mind set.

Well their is a trend in western society that I never saw in Northern Africa in which I saw men there go days without sufficient water and still do complex tasks.....and that is we tend to over hydrate and are generally waterlogged.....I have read that on the average it is suspected that most westerners carry about 5% excess water which I can say has worse effects on performance than being slightly dehydrated sluggishness is more with excess water. When I was a military instructor in patrolling and carrying a 100lb pack I got to the point I could top off with 1 canteen(1 liter) of water to start the mission and go all day during the summer without water until evening and even then only a canteen at the most which matched what I learned growing up....the body can adapt in a short time. My experience is the nutrients that you need for dealing with heat is in food not water too much water can cause hyponatremia in which the body starts to dump its minerals causing cramps, headaches etc..... However the question must be asked is were fighter just over saturated with copious water throughout until the week prior??

I know the Quran preaches to fill your stomach 2/3rds full. 1/3rd for Food, 1/3rd for water and 1/3rd for air. Anything more would likely make you heavier than you need to be to carry out acts of worship. I think over indulging on food and water can be just a detrimental ups under indulging

I run dogs and always carry electrolyte solution to rehydrate them. Its not just the liquid its replacing what you have lost.
I hitchhiked through, Tunisia,Algeria, and Morrocco when I was a young man and quickly noticed I rarely peed obviously I was losing fluid through sweat.
Good informative post by the way!

Probably ethical issues with anything too high intensity due to health risks. It's interesting though.

Us normal people are so much softer, the discomfort would probably harm performance.

I've heard more people in marathon have medical issues with overhydration than dehydration.

That's probably to do with your body having to pump blood to the stomach to digest water. I'm pretty sure our body's also have a reserve of glycogen that will last up to 2 hours.

We can leave religion out of this. Or you can say the relgion fasts a month from sundown to sunset, not advisable for any boxer. There was a basketball player who converted to Islam. I forget his name but his play was down for the month he fasted in.

A lack of water is a reason for ring deaths by the way, especially for those who lose too much of it to make weight.

I think they just drink far too much to the point the salt concentration in their blood drops too low which can cause blood cells to burst. You just absorb water, you don't digest it.

Do you guys think that proper hydration on Jeffries part could have had an effect on the outcome of the fight?

My understanding is they both dried out to make the weight. If Jeffries had "dried out," a couple of years earlier and gotten some sparring in with partners who weren't relics he may have performed slightly better, then again if he had seen how much his abilities had eroded when facing a live boxer,he would probably have called it off.

I'm not convinced it would have been an issue. Look at how poor some of current boxers partners Are, and past it Choyenski doesn't look too bad. Choyenski also made sense because he helped Johnson in the past.

I think it was just the loss of the aheer physical ability and talent he relied on.
