Yes these were three minute rounds, the fight was just scheduled for longer.

Naturaly both fighters paced themselves acording to what they had to be prepared to do.

The margin of Corbett’s lead does get overstated today, because he was much more active in writing history than Jeffries was.

Jeffries did sweep pretty much every round from 15 onwards.

Even so, there is very little doubt in my mind that Jeffries needed the knockout to win, barring a very bad decision.

Mendoza could eat a little humble pie on this one despite a contradicting account he read. He has the quote from the ringside McCoy, Jeffries, and various other viewers of the fight to paint a picture with.

The link did not work. Ali said he beat Frazier because Frazier went to the hospital. Johnson said he took a dive.

I'll take a ring side report over what a fighter says. And those news reports posted here have Jeffries even or slightly in the lead the at fights are scored today.

That is true. Jeffries won via KO. Ali lost on points, Johnson took the count via KO loss. My point was fighters aren't always honest. Sometimes they are extra nice. Other times they lie.

Jeffries according to several round by round reports was either tied or slightly in the with Corbett fading. Had Jeffries won the 23rd, 24th, and 25th on points, he could have won on points.

McVey's gold standard, Adam Pollack says the fight was even before the KO. If McVey disagrees with him, its just another one of his double standards.

Key point. Jeffries improved a bit as champion. By the time they re-matched he was even more skilled and toyed with Corbett.

Can you supply us with a source? I'd be interested to see what they said?

To be honest, it didn't work like that most of the time, a lot of referees didn't do round-by-round scoring, and if hypothetically they thought one fighter had won the first 15 rounds, but then the other fighter finished strong and won the last 10 rounds impressively, they could score the bout a draw and it would be normal for those times, the newspaper men wouldn't object.

I've read several round by round accounts of the Jeffries Corbett first fight ,all had Corbett in front. His manager William Brady in his autobiography stated he went up into the corner in the second half of the fight threw Ryan out and told Jeffries to go for the ko because he was losing the fight and his title ,I would be surprised if you havent come across these accounts yourself at some point.

The link below shows Jeffries saying he was behind against Corbett.

By the 20th round, Jeffries' corner was in a panic. Manager Brady dismissed trainer

from the corner and took charge himself with the simple but direct order, "Knock him out or lose your title!"
Such words were music to Corbett's ears. All he had to do was stay upright for the last five rounds and he would be Heavyweight Champion once again.
Jeffries dispensed with trying to box his old mentor and now began to stalk Corbett around the ring, looking for an opening. Corbett danced away from any threat through the 22nd round.
Midway through the 23rd round, Corbett leaned back to avoid a Jeffries blow, bounced off the ropes and was put on the canvas by a short right hand. The gallant effort was over in a blink of an eye.
Corbett found himself embraced by the public as never before, after his gallant effort to regain the title. The adoration was short-lived, as his next fight, a five-round knockout over

, was widely believed to be a fix"
Jeffries talking about the first Corbett fight .
"I worked my head off for 6 rds and didn't land a solid punch"

    "Corbett boxed rings round me".
"Jim Corbett came the nearest any ex heavyweight champ ever did to winning back the title. In two more rounds he would have had the decision"

Jeffries also said he came out of the first Fitzsimmons fight with a badly cut eyebrow and a black eye, the idea that he came out of that fight unmarked is false.

He was man enough to say he was behind against Corbett,it's a pity his fan boy can't admit it.

I wasn't talking about this particular fight. I don't even remember how that fight went in the primary sources, it's been a long time since I read them last time. I was talking about hypothetical scenario, based on reading hundreds if not thousands of fight reports from that time.
