Yes he was a late starter to the game and learned on the job. He began at 29 .Jeffries had a decade of boxing under his belt by then. But Willard didn't get stopped until he was old and fat and not even Gunboat Smith a prodigious hitter ,wearing doctored gloves could floor him when he was young. Jeff wins this, but he's going the 20rounds to do so.
I wonder if Pollock is going to do a book on Willard Would be a bit of a letdown after Johnson, I imagine.
Which power puncher did Willard prove his durability against? Dempsey creamed him in 3. Rickard said Jeffries hit harder then Dempsey. Willard was also KO'd in his last fight vs Firpo, though he was older. Those were the two best punchers he fought. Early in Willard's career he quit in a fight. Jeffries via mid to late round TKO in a 15-20 round fight. Willard's lack of defense means he takes a pounding.
Gun Boat Smith fought Willard with electrical tape on his hands ,it hardens like cement. Smith said he hit Willard with his Sunday punch twice on the bounce and," Willards a hair just wiggled". Willard was never kod in his prime, nor was he ever knocked down in that timescale. Willard was 37 when Dempsey beat him and 41 when Firpo did. Willard met Moran, Morris, McCarty and Smith none floored him. Rickard? The day he refereed Johnson against Jeffries he said Johnson was the greatest fighter he ever saw.Which of his quotes to you believe? Sam Langford said Dempsey hit harder than Jeffries and was twice as fast. Want any more quotes Walter Mitty?
I expect he will do one on all the champs he covered Hart didn't he? Johnson is the only one so far getting two volumes dedicated to him.Adam obviously thinks he's worth it.

Your inability to acknowledge know results or first hand opinions on those who saw the fighters in action needs some work as they fly over your head. But sure, humor me and produce the Langford quote in context. Sam of course was angling for a Dempsey fight. Langford by the felt Jeffries was the best of the heavies. Dempsey said the same thing. Willard might have been 37, but his punch resistance should not fall off the map, yet it did when Dempsey landed his first hook. As for Gunboat, his KO % is very low at 27.14%!!!! Which top fighter did Gunboat ever KO? Smith had the power to knock Johnson silly in a 1909 exhibition match, but outside of that the better fighter he fought beat him, KOd him, or went the distance losing on points. Hardly a guy I would use to define Willard's durability.
Ive given you 4 very good punchers that Willard survived being floored by Smith,McCarty,Morris,Moran. "Smith was lean, quick and crafty - and a sizzling hitter; He was a very good boxer who moved well and hit sharply with both hands; Slightly larger than a light heavyweight, he hit like a heavyweight" "Sam Langford, when asked how Harry Wills (whom he fought 18 times in his career) would do against Jack Dempsey, said in the June 5, 1922, Atlanta Constitution "Well if he ever fights Dempsey my money will be on the present champion. Dempsey is the greatest fighter I have ever seen. He hits twice as hard as Jim Jeffries and is as fast in the ring as James J. Corbett" Angling for a Dempsey fight? Langford said that in1922 ,when he was39 years old and near blind Humoured now RainMan?
Both men relied on size and strength advantages over their opponents. In this case Willard would have that on his side. Jeffries was the better fighter overall.. Not sure who I'd pick.
I am not sure that either of them relied on their size advantage over opponents realy. It seems to be more the case, that they were the only guys their size who were much good.
C'mon. Jeffries early attrition style would not have worked if he were 167 pounds. Are you telling me that if Jeffries had been 30 pounds lighter against Cobett in their fight go around that he still would have won?
After the second fight with Fitzsimmons the papers were unanimous that had they both been more similar in size [not to mention age,]Fitz would have been the winner.
No, but are you telling me that Dunkhorst or Ferguson (both possible fights), would have given Jeffries a better fight than Corbett did? Has to be asked.
Ah, it wouldn't be a fufilled year without the Dunkhorst Argument rearing its ridiculous head one last time.
