To some extent my interpretation of Jeffries is based on contemporary acounts and yes it dose come with a health warning.

In a scientific paper you can speculate provided you make it clear exactly what asumptions your conclusions rest on.

Pulling back from punches against Frazier in particular was usually a risky business at best, and often a dreadful error.

I agree that this tactic would be suicidal against Frazier but I cite it to show that Jeffries was not the neanderthal of legend.

Obviously it is not ideal to judge a fighter on sparring footage but the footage of Jeffries fighting is of such poor quality that it is more misleading than informative.

I would also take issue with your description of Fitz as,a"slickster with fast hands " Ive never seen him described so,and he certainly looks pretty static and slow against Corbett.

Fitzsimmons is mobile on film and uses lateral movment to set up his punches. He was described as a scientific fighter by contemporary writers and was clearly a verry acurate puncher.

Again the footage we have tells us little. The Lang fight is the only decebnt footage of Fitzsimmons and he is 40 at the time.

Mendoza will say that Jeffries against Fitz was close all the way but Lou Houseman,a sportswriter for a Chicago paper had this to say,"Jeffries at the last was nothing but a bloody pulp,,blinded and reeling,Houseman was there.Fitz was over 40 Jeffries 26.

There is also the question of Fitz having loaded gloves in which case we would expect Jeffries to be a blody mess however this cannot be proven.

If this is not the case then you still have to consider that Fitzsimmons was wearing 4oz horse hair gloves.

Looking at Jeffries against Ruhlin it is Ruhlin who loooks the faster ,more agile man to me,what do you think?
