Tom Sharkey ,lighter ,cruder, and shorter than Rocky, goes 20 and 25rds and without being floored, but Rocky can only manage 9rds? Jeffries did not fight like that training clip,he either slowly stalked, ala Ruhlin,[for whom Jeffries was training when he made those clips ,] or waited for his opponent to come in like Sharkey. The following rank them so. SI Marciano 9th Jeffries 0 SI Senior Editor Marciano 9. Marciano has too much to offer the reticent Jeffries. Jim never seemed to lay out on the line with his physical assets, playing the attrition game with vastly smaller opponents. Trying to attrition Marciano sounds like a really painful exercise with a small success window.
Since edited. Sharkey fought the second fight with a broken finger and damaged ribs for the last few rounds. Quite a few thought Sharkey worthy of a draw.
Jeffries said he found 5'8" Sharkey very hard to fight because," he was always at you, never giving you chance to set yourself".That was Marciano in spades! Sharkey gave Jeffries very close fights,Marciano was more durable, hit harder, and a bit more evasive that the straight ahead Sharkey.
Nothing else really needed with Rocky Marciano. Marcinao would wear him down just like he did everyone else.
It is a hell of a fight . Who knows ? Jeffries should be stronger. His chin terrific. It's a matter of pace. Rocky punched all 15 rounds. Jeffries paced himself for longer fights with lower punch output per round. Jeffries also had numerous hand and arm injuries that handicapped his always going all out .. really no clue but would have loved to have watched it.
That's better. Yes, Jeffries floored Sharkey in both fights and broke his ribs / put him in the hospital with a beating in the 2nd fight which probably should have been stopped. But a broken finger ( Sharkey ) isn't as bad as a disclosed shoulder, which is what Jeffries fought with. Of the people, you listed Goldman worked the Marciano. Why should his opinion count? Farhood is a decent historian, he picks Jeffries Atlas remains a joke, the rest does not list names. I'd bet those organizations aren't familiar with Jeffries outside of his 1910 comeback fight. I've said it before, suppose Ali's only film was his loss to Holmes, how would a panel who never saw his other fights view him? The answer is best given, not very well. Jeffries was routinely rated above Marciano until the 1960's when those familiar with him died out.
Mostly because he fought without hand wraps and those crappy horsehair gloves. With 50's gloves and wrappings, Jeffries I think would have less injuries. Big punchers like Sullivan, and Fitz had hand problems too. The equipment back then to protect the hands was rather poor. The bottom line is Jeffries beat lots of guys like Marciano, but Marciano beat zero guys like Jeffries, and some people who saw Fitz, think he was better than Rocky. I don't think Rocky hit harder than Fitz. While he could be explosive on average it took him 9 rounds to win his title matches, and lord knows he wasn't out boxing or jabbing anyone decent. Rocky's chin and body on someone who hit as hard as Jeffries is untested.
Another match up between two airy fairy, feather fisted, stylistically defensive boxers, who offered no offensive qualities. I sure would pay good money to watch this match up, spilling of claret can be assured. I can see why majority favour Rocky, 49-0 speaks for itself, however Jeffries was hewn from granite, was very capable of responding in kind to Rockys non Marquess of Queensberry rules methodology, and other than his ill judged return to the squared circle vs Johnson after 6 yrs of retirement, Jeffries did himself have a perfect record. Tough guy vs tough guy.
Herbert Goldman is a very well known boxing writer!lol Steve Farhood places Marciano at no5 Jeffries at no 7!lol Jeffries can be seen against Ruhlin and Sharkey in both fights, he is nothing like he is in training clips with his brother Jack.
For which fights other than the Armstrong one ,did Jeffries sustain a hand injury? It was Jeffries choice not to wear handwraps ,he had the same opportunity to do so as his fellow boxers. NB Fitzsimmons had 80 fights ,he claimed over 200 ,Sullivan 41 , Jeffries had 24! Big difference in wear and tear.
I feel it would be a very interesting fight .. I believe that these older guys were for real and that there were different styles and evolutions to a degree but Marciano for the most part was a throwback wham bam guy himself .. if there was anything to Jeffries he was strong as hell, had terrific stamina and could take it so this would have been a very interesting match up ..
Weren’t handwraps around and typically used during Jeffries’ time? I seem to remember reading somewhere that he just didn’t like wearing them for some reason. Not that it really matters all that much...I’ve just always been curious about when handwraps (I believe they were typically called “bandages” at the time) started being used.
