Jim Jeffries vs Sam Langford?

We are talking over 100 years ago when the weight disparity at heavwyeight could be over 40 pounds. I agree. Sam was too small at that time to be a threat. But make no mistake about it, the same Langford would jump on the chance to take the title from Burns who was 168 pounds vs Johnson.

Golvokin however got the better of Povetkin up in a sparring session, so he could beat Wilder in theory. GGG is a special fighter who hits like a heavy.

As for Mayweather, his last fight is vs, the law or IRS. Take your pick...and I say he's going to lose that one. Amazing fighter. POS as a human being.

 

FYI Langford turned down a fight with Al Kaufman.
The reason he didn't fight Burns was because the Canadian had a recurring injury which nixed the fight , they were matched .
Langford was not even a decent sized middleweight during Jeffries reign.
After Johnson ripped Jeffries a new rectum the news papers were virtually unanimous that Langford was too small to make a dent in Johnson and that it would not draw. and that was 6 years after Jeffries last title defence.

Who said this, and if this was the case why didn't Johnson fight Langford for the offers made? Langford pretty much destroyed some of the same guys Johnson gave title shots to! He was clearly the #1 or #2 contender while Johnson was champion---far better than anyone Johnson gave a title shot to excpet for Willard who put him down for the count

If you say two blacks would not draw, then why did Jack Johnson fight Jim Battlling ( who was black )?! It doesn't wash.

185 is not to small if Johnson was 200-205. Langford filled out as a heavyweight by 1909-1915. He wasn't light then for the times, he was very strong, and compact with power, stamina, heart, and skills...nearly impossible to stop in his prime vs the field of fighters he fought.

Tex Rickard the morning after Reno said it and added he had no interest in promoting a fight, between Johnson and Langford. Virtually all the sports pages after Reno said Langford was too small to make a show with Johnson.
The NSC offered Johnson just £3000 to defend against Langford he told them where to shove it.

McIntosh offered Johnson a two fight deal ,Langford and McVey in Australia but his purse fell short of Johnson's $30 ,000 price .
In any event ,once Johnson became a fugitive McIntosh hastily withdrew his offer.

The McMahon Brothers twice tried to put on Johnson v Jeannette and Johnson the champion ,accepted their terms, the authorities vetoed both promotions.


Johnson took the Battling Jim defence as an opportunity to shed the ring rust he had accumulated in a year and a half's inactivity, he was 35 years old and wanted a warm up before taking on Moran, that fight was postponed because of Johnson's broken arm.
On December the 26th ,Boxing Day1911,Langford
just 170lbs when he lost his Coloured Crown to Sam McVey in Australia.

Back to the topic, at no time during Jeffries title reign was Langford a credible opponent for him and of course even if he had been he would not have got a title shot.
Prime Langford would probably have ko'd the Jeffries of Reno. Jeffries was offered a fight with Al Kaufman as a means to rehabilitate himself with the public and get back in contention for another shot at Johnson, he turned thumbs down on it, very wise.

The same sports people and boxing writes who picked Jeffries, inactive, old, and fat to beat Johnson? The picks between the two were about even. Shows what they knew.

Oh come now, there were several offers. I recall seeing a $30,000 offer in the UK. Listing just one source in lame attempt to absolve blame is academically dishonest.

I've seen offers in the papers for more than this by McIntosh and others.

1 ) Why not move the fight then to another location?

2 ) So much for the " promoter " theory that two blacks would not draw.

Jeannette blasted Johnson for using the color line. It seems no offer or location was good enough for Johnson to face Langford or Jeannette.:deal

Disagree. Jeffries had too much ring rust. Jeffries likely would have beaten Al Kaufman if he trained in 1909. Then some of the rust is gone and the confidence and timing would be much better for a 1910 fight.

Kaufman was Ko'd by a light punching O'Brien, and KO'd by Jim Flynn, and Al Panzer in 1911.

McCarthy later destroyed him in two short rounds in 1912 when Kaufmann was just 26 years of age. Kaufman wasn't very good, defensive or durable. Had Jeffries won and looked bad, drew, or lost he likely does not fight Johnson.

 

Johnson signed to defend against Jeannette twice ,and for a rematch with Langford once. He stated countless times that he would defend against ANYONE who could come up with $30,000 ,the same as Burns received for defending against him. Johnson notified the promoter ,[ Burns] that he would be happy to defend against Smith or McCarty in Canada.
