I saw Tubbs got blown out quickly vs Tyson and although he had good skills I would have to think he would lose to the best of an era, Jeffires I was never impressed with Tubbs conditioning, he had skills but I don't think enough to beat the best of an ERA....Jeffries stops him
This is as bad as the Maricano vs. Seldon, Lyle, Butterbean garbage. What new depths will ESB Classic sink to..perhaps Eddie Chambers schooling Dempsey in a few years?
Pretty words all, but none of this is going to make Sharkey any taller, Corbett any stronger or heavier and Fitzsimmons anything more than a freckled middleweight freak. As far as heavyweights, it is the one division that has objectively increased in potential over the years. It is quantifiable. Just as the linemen in the NFL have gone from 230 pounds to 320 pounds over generations, and one would be led to believe, have increased in effectiveness, so have heavyweights become more effective by adding size... when a requisite amount of skills is carried along. It is almost not worth debating it is so self-evident.
with the gloves they used they would not need to be taller, stronger and certainly not heavier. Boxing is not NFL, track and feild or ball room dancing. many years ago Romans and Greeks used lightweight armour - chain mail, spears and the like, handy short swords that clipped into the inside of their shield for close range fighting etc, they were agile and adaptable to any situation. then after that knights came along with long swords wearing two ton of body armour that was so heavy they could not get up if they fell over - useless crap unless they were fighting another man also so encumbered. This is not boxing either but that is a better comparison. except there are no great heavyweight fights anymore. The klitchkos use some skill, are efective at range but there are a lot of other lumbering sumo style chaos out there that bares no relation to skill at all. No. an unarmed man against a gun is not woth debating.
hes not beating lennox lewis. who brought up lennox lewis? with 4oz gloves id take bob, jack dempsey and marciano to beat ernie terrell or abe simon and tony "ice cream" tubbs.
Fitzsimmons is a really strange example Seamus. There are photos of him at 200lbs, and he carries the weight well, in fact, he looks in far better shape than most of todays 200lbers. If he dropped the conditioning training and worked solely on strength like most today , he would easily weigh 200lbs plus. Whether this would improve his performance, nobody knows. I think the Klitchskos have actually really skewed peoples opinions because they are so dominant. And, i think their dominance has far less to do with their size than it does their condition. Which is quite ironic really.
Interesting point on Fitz. Some of the old timer fighters gave weights that many in the press felt were bogus. They might have weight a bit more. Disagree a bit on the K-bros. Its their size, skills, styles, smarts, and conditioning all rolled into one that makes them tough to beat. They force their opponents to confront the all of the above in the ring. The result is the other guys takes a beat down, goes into a defensive shell, or has his will broken and gives up.
