Good interview, glad to see Jim looking well. There was a period in my youth where he was one of the coolest guys Ive ever seen, nice to see nothings changed. The interviewer is a cool fella also, because if I was in his shoes I dont think I could resist letting out a ''Bullllllllllllllllllllsheeeeet Mr Han man!'' after every answer
haha. I sure thought about it. Actually this is what he wrote on my 8x10 of him with Muhammad Ali: [yt]WiUT8qb62WQ[/yt]
Sorry for old thread revival. Too trivial for a PM: Jim Kelly of ESB, you're right, can't find 'Man from Hong Kong' here in Sydney, Australia. At least not the 'Westernised' DVDs anyway. I might (or might not:smoke) check out the Chinatown shops for Asian versions if I have time. In the meantime, here's some rare (from Pedicab Driver) good ole' school kungfu biffo action from Sammo Hung and Billy Chow (real Muay Thai fighter - I like how they incorporate his (attempt at a) plumm into the scene): [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC3cBNRvG4U"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC3cBNRvG4U[/ame]
Man From Hong Kong is a classic as is Pedicab Driver. Have you seen Ip Man 2 for old school kung fu at it's best in new cinema? Thanks for the bump.
Glad to see some more Kung Fu movie heads ^^. :thumbsup and Threadstarter, Glad you enjoyed my interview.
^ :blood Oh man, I'm so torn. As a Wing Chun afecionado, I loved Ip Man (1) - well, except for the 10-karateka fight scene where he had the first 2 knuckles bloodied and bruised instead of the last 3 - but I spit on Ip Man 2. IM and IM2 are like Wall Street and Wall Street 2 for me...heaven & hell. Wall Street / Ip Man = Gold. Classic Wall Street 2/ Ip Man 2 = Not fit to be toilet paper. To be fair, the first half of IM 2 was OK - the rooftop scene where he explains 'Asking Hand'; the Sifus Challenge on the tabletops started to get too wire-fu (for me); gangfight scene in the fish-markets also seemed a bit too 'wirey'. AND THEN, Tornado and the Bad Brits come inatsch. At which point, people like my father and young Chinese ultra-nationalists would have lapped up the (IMHO) propaganda but I was cringing so badly from the over the top demonisation of the gwailos I wanted to leave the cinema. It wouldn't have been so bad if the kungfu was good but the final fight scene was like a rock-em sock-em Rocky scene. :deadUgh, sorry for the venting but it left a very bad taste in my mouth. Sigh...when I get old and decrepit, I'll be sitting on the sofa eating my peanuts and will plug into my eye-jacks copies of old school classics from Lau Kar Leung and The Three Brothers (Jackie, Sammo, Yuen Biao). They don't make 'em like they used to. Wu Jing, please assume the throne, Donnie's getting on in years. ---------------------------------------------------- PS. ESB's Search Function sucks balls. Can't find any kungfu/martial arts movie thread. Either that or nobody has started one:hey ---------------------------------------------------- Here's a snippet of one of my inspirational favourites, 'Beardy' Leung Kar Yan - no formal kungfu training, just a kungfu flick fan like us. Decided to get into the movies. Bugged studio heads. Got in after they discovered he had 'physical chameleon' skills like Neo of 'The Matrix' or Chuck from, er, 'Chuck'. You couldn't write this stuff up! Somebody should make a movie about this guy's life! Btw, if anyone knows what the best version of 'The Victim' is, please post it here - I used to be (2003-2006) a rabid fan of Hong Kong Legends DVDs but haven't been keeping up [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52s0VujkUiQ"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52s0VujkUiQ[/ame]
Really? Hated? Wow. Well thanks for explaining at least. I prefer Ip Man 2 to the first - but maybe that's just because of Sammo's presence. The second half of Ip Man 2 plays out like Rocky 4 but I enjoy it. Over the top gwailos don't bother me. American cinema is just as guilty for stereotyping other nationalities over the years.
^ Cool. Guess I went OTT  I can understand the Sammo factor - for years, nay, decades, I was in awe of the physical feats a man of his girth could achieve. I think someone (might even have been him) said it best, "Elephants can jump!" Met his wife at a cabaret show once, very nice lady. RE: racial stereotyping. We should all be aspiring to be better, not indulging in a *cough cough* race to the bottom. The only thing IMO missing from IM2 was the bad guy twirling his moustache! Anyway, I'm eagerly awaiting Jackie Chan's 12 Zodiacs - hope he still has the awe factor.
Ip Man plays like a classic drama with kung fu fights in it while Ip Man 2 is more like a straight up kung fu movie. It really does mirror Rocky/Rocky4 in a way. The comments made by the white devils never bothered me because you could see much worse posted in the general forum of this website. Just start a thread about boxing vs kung fu and see what comes out of people's mouths. That said it is refreshing to see fellow fight fans with good taste in kung fu movies. Thanks for the head's up on Jackie Chan's 12 Zodiacs. I've been out of the kung fu movie loop for a few years so it's nice to hear about what's coming up.
the man from hong kong is still on my list.. Pedicab Driver is amongst my fav new wave flicks..i need to update my crappy vhs copy..
The Victim is my favourite film by Sammo, love that whole fight at the end :good. Leung Kar Yan is the man, nothing like watching him go crazy and beat the **** out of people.
