Even Graham Houston had to comment on the ridiculous statement made by one of the worst at HBO if not the worst. They guy has 0 knowledge of the sport. Lampley said Lastarza was the best of all Marciano's opponents and while Roland was a capable fighter I think he falls behind Walcott, Charles and Moore, but what amazes me is his continuous lack o f knowledge. I miss Larry at least he does not cow-tow to anyone. Showtimes Bernstein is another biased guy "I don’t know quite why Jim Lampley brought Rocky Marciano into the commentary with his suggestion that Marciano somehow fought inferior opposition, mentioning the name of Roland LaStarza. LaStarza was a capable heavyweight of the 1950s (though he would be small for a cruiserweight today) who had fought very well against Marciano three years earlier, when the decision in Marciano’s favour was deemed controversial. As Max Kellerman reminded Lampley, Marciano, like the Klitschkos, fought the best of his era. Nino Valdes? Well, the big Cuban lost to Bob Baker and Archie Moore in what in effect were elimination matches for the right to meet Marciano, and Baker performed so poorly against Valdes that he eliminated himself from getting a title fight" Graham Houston I think the ex-fighters are the best
I'd love for Houston to replace Lampley, even without knowing what his voice sounds like (and realizing it probably comes with a thick British accent )
If he sticks to calling boxing, hes a hell of a play by play fight caller, probably the best ever. Hes not there for his vast knowledge of boxing.
Does it really matter? I mean anyone who knows their boxing, knows the man is talking rubbish,; everyone else, who is just watching with little or no knowledge, is not really going to care, and probably thinking Marciano's main opponent was either Apollo Creed, Mr T, or that big Russian anyway...
He is no historian but it would be odd for a man not to know anything about a sport he has called for the past 30 or so years.
Haven't heard him about that. Lampley is not known for his smart comments. I remember during one fight he summed up the Punch stat numbers: Boxer had 40% of his punches being power punches. Of boxer B, 45% of his shots were power punches. Lampley then draws his conclusion: "That means an astonishing amount of 85% in this fight were power punches! atsch Then there was the other embarrassing incident where he kept saying BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG ..... BANG, BANG... Kellerman: I really like how Pacq- BANG, BANG, BANG! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEJ8qRDO9Ko[/ame] Still, I do like Lampley for his ability to make boring fights watchable. I think he combines really well with Merchant (my favorite): the fast talker and the, well, slow, thinker. Showtime's cast can be very biased. Peter vs Toney and Brewster vs Liakhovic were abysmal. I also prefer than one of the three is a former boxer. Currently, I think Briggs and Tarver should get more air time (as commentators). Roy Jones declined along with his boxing skills, but he's gotten himself together lately and is pretty good again. Leonard and Cycz were excellent. Foreman was wacky, but he did have that Lampley-factor.

After having reviewed it numerous times I have come to the conclusion, that it is probably the most greatest moment in the history of boxing :deal Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang.
I am pretty sure he stated this because LaStarza was at his best when he fought Rocky and the other 3 were either past their prime or close to 40 years old. Actually Lampley is not the only one that has stated that either. I have heard it from several others as well.
Walcott of the 1st Marciano fight would knockout Lastarza Charles of the 1st Marciano fight wins a clear decision or late stoppage over Lastarza Louis of 51 wins a close decision over Lastarza. Louis was too big, and roland wouldn't be able to get away from Louis' jab. Archie Moore of 1955 knocks out any version of Lastarza Let's be real folks
Roland falls behind Louis as well. You think Louis who was a hulk at 6'2 215lb would allow a featherfisted 185lb defensive fighter to outbox him? Louis would jab his head off all night long. Louis busted the **** out of a prime ezzard charles face, and turned a prime Rocky Marciano's face into burger meat.
