Lampley is the ****, there is no better voice during a big fight than Jims, "look at holyfield what a warrior the champion now has bowe wobbling" that will always be a memory like no other.

To me, Lampley is one of the best voices in boxing.

You have to be kidding. Jim Lampley is one of the best commentators in the sports of boxing.

His voice is iconic and he controls the broadcasts very well. He does call punches that don't exist alarmingly often. But its Larry's/Max's job to "keep it real", not Lampley's. The broadcast needs a corporate shill and he's it, but he covers his other duties very well.

Jim, Larry & George > All. Specially when George and Larry would argue all the time.

Lampley has a great voice and does do well controlling the broadcast, as was mentioned before.

But, as was also mentioned before, he's an UNBEARABLE shill for the "house" fighter (think Margo vs Cotto and how Manny and Max were trying to get him to see reality) and he doesn't call a good fight. That is, he calls punches that aren't there and misses punches that are there.

This is a misconception. All NATIONAL level commentators "go with the flow". That's the basic rule. Nuthug the one who's winning at the moment.-- And that's the way it is on every other sport, specially basketball.

No, it's not. And the reason this doesn't happen in all sports is because the broadcaster and the network might not have the same investment in one guy or a team. Like, CBS might not try to "sell" an NCAA hoops team as hard as Lampley tries to sell, for example, Jermain Taylor in a fight with B-Hop because CBS is promoting all of NCAA basketball and not just one guy.

I'll give you two examples of this: NBC and Notre Dame football (if they still have a contract) and Tiger Woods in golf.

With NBC and Notre Dame, or whatever channel is showing Tiger, they will ALWAYS look to promote ND/Tiger or feature positive bits and anecdotes because that is the product.

It's the same thing with HBO and the 'house' fighters. And the main guy to get the "sell job" over is Lampley. I understand why he has to do this but you can't pretend he doesn't do it.

It makes things really annoying to watch, particularly when the "house" guy is getting beat, like Taylor-Pavlik, Cotto-Margo, Pavlik-Hopkins, etc. There's a level of denial and/or apology that goes on and it can ruin the broadcast.

Same with Teddy Atlas and fighters he doesn't like, the K Bros, for example. He'll go out of his way to cut them down even if it makes no sense or it's not credible to pick against them.

That's the function Lampley serves at HBO. He has to do it, but it's annoying as hell.
