He is, but he can get into this "shill" mode as well. The most glaring example I can think of right now is how bitter he was when Hopkins exposed Pavlik. Larry kept talking about how Pavlik didn't have to take the fight. We know, Larry, and yes Hopkins made the house fighter look bad. But Pavlik took the fight, and B-Hop got to crow. Deal with it.
lampley is the blow by blow guy, he is supposed to hype the fight, not give us in depth commentary. It has changed a bit from the old days cause no one listens to it on radio so he doesnt have to call out every shot. But boxing is still loads more exciting than the NFL announcers who go off on strange tangents that have nothing to do with the sport. Atleast they stay focused and on topic on HBO
WTF, he does his ****ing job. Do you realy watch boxing to analize commentators, or you just want his job????
I like Jim. Yes he is a bit of a cheerleader but he is the blow by blow guy like elterrible said and he keeps the fight alive. "Miguel Cotto doesnt beat you, he beats you up."
Hey I don't know what you're talking about because Arreola was supposed to be the next big thing, that was his night and he was supposed to take advantage of ... I really like Jim Lampley's closing remarks and how he gave a bit of advice to anyone looking to challenge or who thinks they can beat one of the Klitschko's ... "These guys are 365 day guys, they never take a day off ... you can't take 10 days off, party and drink, then expect to come back to the gym and pick up where you left off ... and truly expect to compete with these guys ... you have another thing coming"
Only thing I don't like about lampley is he pushes for the other commentators a bit too much ... and I know thats his job, but ****, you've been in the game for 20 something years ... you got to know something.
Remember him on one documentary about Tyson, & he got a bit choked up about Tyson in the dressing room after the Lewis fight, I warmed to him a bit after that
you guys should be grateful for hbo commentary i have to listen to sky commentary for big fights and it is totally ****
Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley, Harold Lederman, and Roy Jones or George Foreman is the best HBO can offer in the commentator booth. Max Kellerman suck-didley-ucks!!!! At least he knows it.
This is true, I recall the Marcos Antonio Barrera fight vs JMM - when Lampley went on a rampage for the referee not calling the knock down for JMM's glove touching the canvas. I don't him yelling like that when Zab punched Floyd and his glove touched the canvas.
If you don't like him, you can always send him over to the UK to work for Sky. We'd love to have someone as professional and as high quality generally as Lampley leading our broadcasts.
