Just watched Rocky Balboa again and when Jim Lampley says at the end of the fight 'incredible is the most overated term in sports but i hate to say it guys this is incredible' i got a strong sense of De Ja Vu. Has he ever said that in a great fight before, as im sure i heard it recently. Also what was it when Lampley said 'It Happens, it happens (think it could have being Foreman vs Moorer).
If you listed the top 20 greatest broadcaster quotes on boxing events, Lampley would fill up at least half the page. The other half would be Larry Merchant.
Lampley always seemed to be an ok announcer to me.... is he a good puncher? you have to ask his wife.
Corny as they may be they're remembered for a reason. Lampley is the voice of boxing to many casual fans.
LOL... Wish there was footage of that. We've all seen that old Merchant clip where he goes all Charlie Manson on that dude tryin' to interupt his interview, but I would like to see the "calm and cool" Lampley all pissed off in a rage (although, against a man would be the right thing,....obviously).
Lamps does have GREAT quotes all the time, but IMO one of his biggest assets to the Team is how well he sets up the "pass" to the others on the Team.
I ****ing hate Lampley. If I came across him in an alley I would take a 2x4 with rusted nails driven through one end and beat him to a bloody ****ing pulp with it. Then I'd find Larry Merchant and throw his senile ass off the top of a building Then I'd find David Lederman and shove a cyanide capsule down his fat wheezing throat.
I've had a couple times where I felt he was biased (and you usually only notice this if it's against the fighter you are cheering for), but overall, he's excellent and I fear the day he is no longer "up to the job". Kellerman is getting better, but he seems to be a "color" guy like Merchant, and can't see him doing blow by blow in Lamps shoes. It's always hard to replace an all time great. We also have to look at the fact Mike Buffer is getting up there, and won't have his "LETS GET READY TO RUUUMMMBBBBLLLEEE" for TOO much longer either. I fear for those days.:yep
Lampley does have a great voice for broadcasting, but his sayings can be very cheesy, overused, and often seem forced. I like it better when a commentator just loses his ****ing mind and his emotion comes through in his quotes as genuine. My own personal favorite HBO broadcasting moment was when Manny Steward started shouting like a crazy man in the 12th round of the Toney - Jirov fight. That was nothing but pure excitment from a true fan of the sport. Not none of that fake manufactured crap that Larry and Lampley dish out.
In most cases, Buffer is recorded beforehand. At least that's how it is on some MMA shows. I think Kellerman IS getting better but as said, he's a color guy who occasionally has to handle the point because unfortunately Bob papa and Lennox Lewis can't do it. Fact is when Merchant retires and when Lampley graduates to head producer of HBO Boxing (I doubt they remove him off camera), You're looking at those three leading the pack.
