Shout out to FightHype and Sean Zittel for arranging this interview with Jim Lampley. Jim has some points to back up his strong opinions. Thoughts? This content is protected
Does he have Joe Bidenitis? That was a horrible interview filled with meandering puffs of smoke masquerading as thoughts.
so what Lewis was he talking about? even the 37yr old one that TKOd Vitali would beat Fury as far as Mayweather and Crawford go, combined they are still a win short of Robinson's 91-0 streak
Hailing Fury's counter-punching skills when they shined the brightest against limited sluggers like Whyte, Wilder, or Chisora. Not so much against the likes of Cunningham or Wallin (one very talented but was an old cruiser, the other limited but southpaw) whom he had to move inside and dogfight against, even cheating against the USS. It was a long time ago, and I didn't find the Wallin fight close, the cut aside, but the point remains: Fury has a thin resume, especially as far as stylistic variety goes. He thrives on sluggers. Emmanuel might have been right, but I doubt he took into account coke, wh***s, depression, and lack of discipline. Early in his career, Benitez might have been hailed as the second coming of Jose Napoles, but there is a reason Marciano is universally beloved. Discipline and dedication is a must in this sport, and Lennox with his preparation, focus, and student mentality is in no way an underdog against Tyson, especially when taking that horse kick of a punch into account.
Also disagreed on Steward being the greatest heavyweight trainer of all time. Eddie Futch is at least on par with him, if not better. Molded Frazier into a dominant champion of the second half of the 60's, demolishing his opposition and culminating in FOTC where he dropped Ali. Turned Norton, a late starter, into an avoided machine (per Futch contenders the like of Quarry refused to face him after he rebuild and polished himself due to the extremely high risk-low reward ratio) and orchestrated yet another defeat of Ali and another extremely close SD against the best version of Ali we've seen in the 70's. He greatly contributed to training of both Larry Holmes and Micheal Spinks (refusing to help either in their fight, as he felt both are going to a special place in boxing history and he can't pick sides) as well as shaping Bowe into what could be an extremely dominant champion if not for his absolute lack of discipline. Also, predicted the fall of Mike Tyson and pre-Steward Lewis.
Not sure. What I heard was Jim saying he hated hypothetical fantasy fights and then used Lewis Dempsey ect..as the example
