This guy's a fighter who's relevant to a lot of resumes and we have a decent amount of film on, but what do you think of him as an actual fighter? What do you think of his style and ability? This content is protected Bit of a goof, no?
goof is the wrong word. "Freak" is the right term. Only 5'9, possessed an extremely long reach, near 80". One report described "Bivins looked as though he could tough the ground with his hands standing straight up letting his arms dangle" lol. His long arms allowed him to outbox many 6'3 heavyweights at long range during his career. Bivins was a very scientific boxer. In most of the film we see on youtube he appears slow. That is because most of the footage is him while past his prime. If you watch film of him in the early 1940s, he was not slow. He was quite slick, cagey, and had very nice upperbody movement. Good swift jab, could punch, and was very intelligent. Also had a nice chin, and a lot of courage. An underrated middleweight, ATG light-heavyweight, and a very good heavyweight.
Jimmy Bivens was built somewhat along the lines of Sam Langford. Bivens was a hell of a fighter who I was privileged to see at MSG fighting the tough Melio Bettina in a draw. Bivens fought everyone in the tough, tough era of the 1940s, and held his own,or beat Archie moore, Ezzard Charles, Lloyd Marshall, and without a scintiila of doubt would be light heavyweight champion today...Bernard hopkins, are you listening....
Following Jimmy Bivins fights exists: Anton Christoforidis 3, Charles Williams, Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles 2+3+4. I would have loved to se his fights against Lloyd Marshall Woller
I know you mentioned once you love the charles fight gpater...can't get into it man. I've tried. Total snooze from both guys
There's two fights though aint there? The one I have is for a Milk Fund, in Cleveland I think. Its two potential top 10 P4Pers strutting their stuff. Its great stuff IMO.
