Jimmy Carruthers' KO of Vic Toweel might be the most extraordinary in all filmed boxing

Great post lad! Described Carruthers very well. A fighter who doesn't really have big names on his record other than Toweel but one who I think is probably very dangerous h2h for most bantams throughout history. Him and Rose would've been a great fight I reckon. Lionel was physically monstrous as well although a different stylist somewhat, so slick and smooth. I don't think Jimmy would've matched up too badly with Fammo either.......

Indeed Mr McGrain, those were the days when champions went out on their shields, a much tougher time than now in so many ways.

It was actually culturally unacceptable for fights to be stopped without a ten count in those pre Benny Paret vs Emile Griffith times.

i thought you guys would enjoy this little video about two of Sydney's most famous fighters.

Amateur boxer and notorious chick magnet Tony Madigan and Carruthers.

    Cheers All.

Good morning Russell, mate its before my time but my Dad and my boxing elders used to reckon that the Griffith vs Paret fight changed everything.

Paret was shockingly killed in front of a prime time tv audience in America and it was like people's eyes were finally opened as to how dangerous a sport boxing actually is. I have read more than a couple of pieces by people who saw the fight as kids and how traumatic it was.

Refs and corners started stopping fights against fighters wishes which according to my old man and his mates hadnt really been the case before.

In this country the Roko Spanja vs Hector Thompson fight in the early 1970s had a massive impact as it was televised on " TV Ringside " at prime time.

    Cheers Amigo.

Sound travels backwards in Australia, sort of like the water goes down the drain backwards.

So when an Aussie goes to South Africa, it messes up the harmonics as sonic worlds collide.
