This is a video of Australia's first official world boxing champion Jimmy Carruthers in action in his title winning fight and first defense against South African Vic Toweel.

Even though the film quality isn't that good you'll see one of the most dominant title winning performances captured on film imo, plus some highlights of their much more competitive rematch.

Carruthers looks damn impressive in this footage to me.

    Anyway enjoy:good

Great stuff! First time I've seen Carruthers, he looks a real handful and a southpaw. A big strong looking bantamweight. Was it down to weight problems that he initially retired?
Got any other gems from the Australian boxing vault?

Carruthers was actually found to have a 30ft long tapeworm in his body after his second last defense I believe,so I'm tipping making weight wasn't that hard for him.:D No I think he was financially set (at the time) and went into the hotel industry and just was tired of fighting.Sadly his finances went bad and he made a comeback 7 years later but wasn't remotely the same fighter. He lost his undefeated record and didn't win anything of note.Your typical boxing comeback really.:-(

This was actually the first time I'd seen him fight as well and I agree with you about how rangy and strong he looked also his power looked decent despite not being a noted puncher.

I'll keep looking for some more footage of Aussie fighters but Flamengo's the man if you want to find out anything about Aussie fighters.
