Jimmy Carruthers enjoyed a trememndously quick rise to fame, becoming the bantamweight champ in only his 15th bout, and he enjoyed an equally quick retirement just four years into his professional career. What if he boxed on?

Could the wily Aussie southpaw beat the likes of Raul Macias, Jose Becerra and Jose Medel in the latter half of the 1950s?

The guess is anyones.. Fact of the matter, he disposed of Toweel in a glorious fashion, argueably the most effective removal of any world champion in the Bantamweight division prior to then. With a solitary punch, Toweel was renderred inanimate, and easy picking for Carruthers. He also disposed of Toweel a second time, as Im sure you know.

God knows what may have been, had he remained active??? He was prone to cut, and may have struggled to make the Bantam fight weight for a further few defences??? I believe his hands were questionable at the stage of retirement also.

147-0..... I think 14.7-0 would have been the outcome had he faught Satoshi Shinyaki for the Bantam crown.

In fairness to Toweel, he was having a great deal of difficulty at that stage of his career in getting down to the bantam limit and was by many accounts drained going into both fights. He was also suffering from double vision if I remember correctly going into the Carruthers fights. A peak Toweel would have put up a much better showing against Carruthers, and in my opinion would have defeated him by stoppage late in the fight.

As for how Jimmy would have fared had he carried on, I think he would have defended his crown a few more times before either moving up, losing the title on the scales or losing it to one of the other great bantams who were on the horizon such as Macias and Becerra. He wasn`t good enough to beat either man in my opinion, but he would have given them some awkward moments before losing.
