If anything, he could seemingly bang. KO'ed Tony Tubbs in the first round in the middle of a Ellis losing streak. Also beat Bobby Quarry who was a decent if very unmotivated fighter. Anyone know anything about him?
i remember jimmy ellis 23 second ko of tubbs..think it was acase of tony's chin being pretty poor at that point-he had been ko'd in 1 by lionel butler a few fights earlier..ellis fought foreman, straight after george had lost 2 holyfield and got rocked all over the ring until stopped in the 3rd..didnt recall seeing much power on display against foreman..next fight after george was a 5 round loss to former L/H tony willis, who never did too well against H/W..in his last fight ellis was blown out by a young shannon briggs in the opener..a clubfighter, but a gutsy one..just not enough of everything to cope with anything near world class..the tubbs result was a shocker though..still,these things happen in boxing
George got $5 million for smacking Ellis around, too. And then HBO actually aired an apology about the mismatch and vowed to force Foreman into facing a tougher opponent in his next fight. Enter Alex Stewart. And we all know how that turned out!
Ellis was just awful if rated against world class heavies of the 90s. His power is irrelevant in this debate because there is nothing to suggest he had anything approaching average power at the top level of the division. By 1992 I would of been pick-em against Young Joe Louis, hell Joe Louis would of been favourite against Young Joe, by then.
Yes , i remember the first time i saw him, he fought a skinny heavy in Vegas. The slick skinny black heavy was bashing at Jimmy like he was in slow motion, then...... BOOM !!! Jimmy just levelled the action with a knockout. The next real show i saw him on was against a comebacking Foreman getting his face caved in....
Ellis had as padded a record as Lamar Clark, worse! He had kos over novices and long losing streak tough men ,the first time he met a real fighter he was slaughtered ,power puncher ****.
He KO'ed a world class past prime fighter in 20 something seconds... how, then? I'm not saying he's Foreman level, but he obviously had some power.
Yeah, just looking at the guys record and his KO percentage shows he has power. Not enough ability/skills to land a big shot against a world class fighter, but that doesn't take away the fact he could hit.
Tubbs was 45 ,a long way past being a world class fighter.I suggest you check out Ellis's record on box rec com, basically he kod a load of stiffs .Nothing personal in my comments.
