Ellis diod not lack punch. He had a very hard, fast sneaky right hand ... putting that aside, Charles was simply better.
Ellis had a hard ,quick right hand, he scored quite a few early stoppages with it, he dropped Bonavena twice too, he could punch.
See.... Jimmy Ellis was not a bum, but he never achieved greatness either........ I think Ellis could hang tuff with the likes of "Tunney, Charles and "prime" Patterson....... He measures up well there........ MR.BILL
I mean...not really. He can compete with them, but in the end, all those men would outclass him. Were in a different league in skills department.
Tunney, outspeeds and outboxes him. Ellis had his hands full with a past prime Floyd. Let's not get too carried away here. Charles should beat Ellis, but Jimmy would not be embarrassed by him ,imo.
You know, Ellis was rarely ever out-boxed in a fight...... When Ellis lost, it was due to getting battered and over-powered by phsically stronger dude's...... MR.BILL
Ellis might give Charles a real tough fight. Charles was a masterful boxer, but Ellis was no slouch either.
so did you really score it for Ellis? I thought Patterson clearly won it. If you want to go by the books why don't you say Vitali Klitschko is the hardest puncher ever or that Marciano is the best. Same logic you're using there, dude.
I have "Ellis - Patterson" from '68 on tape.... In color too....... The fight was close..... Perhaps a draw would've been best, but I think the WBA wanted to move on and away from the aging Patterson by 1968..... The WBA was hyping the much fresher Ellis in 1968....... Again, more boxing politricks........ MR.BILL
Apart from Ali ,which really good boxers did Ellis meet? An aging Patterson deserved no less than a draw against him, and Ali comprehensively outpointed him, before stopping him late.
I would have to pick Charles here, like others have said Charles is just better in almost every area.. My guess is Ezzard wins on points, but a KO later on in the fight would also be a probability..
So do I In their first match, Marciano actually spent more time with his back to the ropes than Charles did. (There's a photograph of Rocky covering up against them as Ezz bores in with his own heavy guns, a surreal image I haven't seen for years.) Charles could do it with both hands, and he had superior endurance. Jimmy was tough, and had badly underrated power in his right, but the only significant stoppage win on his resume was Leotis Martin. Charles had Beshore, Oma, Valentino, Satterfield, Moore, Violent Ray (immediately after Baroudi), Lesnevich, Barone, Layne, Bivins, Oakland Billy Smith, Marshall 2X, Baksk.... Far too much of a gulf in class for Ellis to overcome here.
