It's nice to be back...:hi I don't know if this has been discussed yet but I'll bring it up anyway. It seems that whenever someone points out robberies they often point to this fight here. Most of the controversy surrounding this fight was the fact that Ellis won even though his face looked like he lost a fight to a room full of baseball bats while Floyd was pretty much unmarked. Howard Cosell took the ref to task about the decision afterwards because he believed that Floyd won the fight. George Foreman called it the worst robbery he had ever seen. Like the referee, I feel Ellis won the fight because of his consistency. Floyd had the exciting and powerful combinations, but he would fight in bursts while Ellis continued to let his hands go. Floyd was taking far too much time off...particularly in the later rounds and it cost him the fight, in my view. My opinion, of course. If you've seen this fight, what do you all think?
BIG DEE HERE= It was the worst dec. in my lifetime in a heavyweight champiionship fight Harold Valan was crap as a referee. The KD of Ellis was called a slip by Valan. Ya it was a slip alright caused by a punch to the chin and Ellis tried to drag Patterson along with him. Patterson butcherd Ellis broken nose cut inside the mouth and an eye cut. While Floyd Patterson walked out of the damn ring unmarked after 15 rds. Jimmy Ellis threw a lot of punches that hit not a damn thing as shown by Patterson`s unmarked face. Floyd didn`t even look like he had even been in the ring that day. Ellis on the other hand look like he had got mugged in New York `s Central park. Jimmy Ellis hit a lot of air and not anything else. Patterson on the other hand threw less punches and hit almost a everything he threw at namely Ellis`s face. THE DECISION BY VALAN WAS A JOKE.
One of those Swedish fights where the referee was the only voting official. At least Joe Frazier brought his own referee wth him when he fought Ellis.
I am a great fan of Floyd Patterson, but he did not deserve the decision against Ellis. Floyd fell asleep in large parts of the fight, and let Ellis pick up the points. Lst time I saw watched the fighi I scored it 8-6-1 Ellis. Woller
I'm the biggest Patterson fan on board here but after about 40 or so viewings, I don't see it as the out and out robbery that many continue to. Floyd shouldn't have been so passive and remained in his attack modes longer. I could see the fight being scored either way (close) and that was basically because of Floyd's fighting in spurts. There is the old cliche that says you have to take the fight to the champ and, while Patterson did attack and hurt Ellis more than the reverse, one could argue that he didn't maintain that to the degree needed. P.S. I still love that 4th round tho, I was watching it live on WWofS's after Floyd was shaken up in the 3rd. It's beautiful to watch Patterson open up in attack mode, a thing of beauty...:bbb
You remind me of my father jowcol. A HUGE die hard Floyd Patterson fan since he was a kid. His favorite fighter. Difference is he thinks Patterson-Ellis was one of the biggest robberies ever and reminds me about it everyday. He bugged me about it so much that I watched it and scored it, I had patterson clearly winning 9 rounds to 6. Patterson knocked ellis down, broke his nose, bashed up his face, and floyd was unmarked. What more can you do??
Interestingly enough Valan was the referee for the second Frazier/ Foreman fight ,and did a decent job,but he got it terribly wrong in Sweden ,imo.
You can twist it, you can turn it, but whatever you do Ellis got a 15 round decision. Close, debatable, but he got it. Yes Ellis face was a mess, but have you seen a picture of Pep after he won the second Saddler fight? He certainly looked like the loser. Woller
Valen was the referee in the horribly corrupted terell-wepner decision where he scored the fight for wepner, despite terrell winning 11 out of the 12 rounds. Terells cornerman attacked valen with a knife after the fight. Valen is one corrupt ref..
Harold Valan and some other writer made the case that the fight in person could possibly not have looked as close as it did on tv. I have never bought this. I think it was robbery pure and simple, and Patterson, true to his classy, nice guy image, merely congratulated Ellis after the fight and didn't ***** or complain about it. Patterson not only won that fight with a knockdown in round 14, but did a number on Ellis' face in the process. Not only did Ellis lose, but he LOOKED like a loser after the bout.
Go over to the cyberboxingzone site and click on the "boxing pictures" section and go to 'Patterson-Ellis'. I have more of a "Floyd wuz robbed" mindset over there as I have a couple of buddies there I've swapped tapes with and I often jaw with them over this fight. I've posted a picture in ring center immediately following the decision and added a little sarcastic comment below it. A great photo! Actually back to the fight, despite my previous comments, consider this: IMHO: Patterson clearly won rounds 4-6-13-14 Ellis clearly won rounds 1-3-15 That's 4-3 P Valen scored it 9-6 E Given that Valen saw it as I did, that would mean he scored rounds 2-5-7-8-9-10-11-12...6-2 E and that just never seemed right to me...
