This fight nearly happened. It was almost a done deal, but because the BBBc did n't recognise the WBA,it fell through. Our 'ENERY,future King of Brut aftershave sent back his British title belt in protest, and regained it the following year from Jack Bodell. What if this fight had gone ahead ? While Cooper's left hook would always been a threat,I reckon Ellis would have still won, either by runaway decision,or because of Henry bleeding. Thoughts ?
I think Ellis would have gotten Henry Cooper out of there before round 9, and not by virtue of cuts either..he would have had Cooper down a couple of times AND cut before the ref stopped it.
Ellis by mid rounds stoppage Cooper would be competetive for a little bit but Ellis would winning handily by the time he stops him in 8.
ellis was a good sharp shooter and tough. certainly beter than anyone cooper fought post 66' but ellis could be hit. cooper was excelent aginst jose urtain, he would not be easy for anyone. cooper was a good seasond fighter and excelent boxer. I Still give ellis the edge but cooper had a great chance of winning. a beter chance than he had against ali and he only lost because ali got lucky with cuts. quarry had a much harder time with brian london than cooper ever did and ellis only edged quarry. ellis v cooper was a 50-50 fight. ellis was prety burned out by the time he got the belt and did not beat patterson. No way would cooper be easy for ellis.
I think Cooper was good, especially for his size, but on the level of Ellis or Quarry? I don't know about that. Cooper was on a good run at the end of his career but don't forget that while Ellis certainly had his struggles with Patterson, arguably losing, Cooper was outclassed and flattened by Patterson's right hand in only 4 rounds.
floyd was on fire agianst cooper, he was realy in top form that night. floyd was out to prove he could improve on ali's performance against the same guy. IMO that and the 2nd ingo fight were floyds best nights. patterson never looked beter. No way did quarry and ellis face the same floyd. cooper outclassed mildenburger and beat a peak folly who was far too much for bonavena first time around. cooper was a strong contender who could always do 15 good rounds and was very experienced. bar a cut (which only stopped him a few times) he would hold his own with anyone.
That's the consensus among people who know their boxing and who are aware of this bout nearly happening. I have to agree, too. It's not likely that Cooper could have blocked or withstood Ellis's sneaky, hard right hand. Ellis could crack with his right. Cooper didn't have a good chin. Given Ellis's skill as a boxer, I think he would have eluded Cooper's left hook, too. So, I say Ellis by stoppage within eight or nine rounds, and Cooper very possibly would have taken the count.
Ellis to score an early KO/stoppage against a 'seen better days' 35/36yr old Cooper. I cant stand on the legitimacy of this but i'll go ahead anyway. I remember hearing (or possibly reading) a story that the Frazier camp were looking at a possible fight against Cooper around 68/69 and Coopers manager jim wicks nearly had a heart attack and wouldnt have any part of it, respectfully declining.
cooper himself would admit frazier was all wrong for him. He was prety open about who was right and wrong for him. Liston, frazier and marciano were out but he liked his chances against ellis, patterson and ali -with some justification against the latter. folly was a vertual uncrowned champ when cooper beat him since patterson was defending against radmacher and brian london at thetime, sure folly beat henry back but it shows coopers class. folly and ellis are on par IMO.
Henry of course was stopped several times on cuts, but he was also flattened several times.Patterson,Johanssen and Folley knocked him out but so did Joe Bygraves who although decent wasn't exactly top notch.
