His win over Folley was very good. His best win i think. Look, i like Cooper, met him twice and he couldnt have been more pleasant, but i really had to laugh at his take on the johansonn fight. He reckoned they put him in a corner with the sun in his face so Ingo could rush him for the KO. Also thought he took it a bit far with harry gibbs for awarding bugner the decision, as bad as it was and all. but as far as meeting ellis at this particular time, for me its an early night. Dundee had his man as one of the best 1st round bangers around. im not saying he'd win in a round but not far off it
I like ellis. he was not groomed in the traditional sence. Because he had to fight in a tournement to become a belt holder he fought so many 50-50 fights to get there he was all burnt out by the time he did it. The guys he beat were title chalenger material bonavena, martin and quary. tough fights back to back and he struggled badly with patterson. theres a good argument he was ripe whoever he got next. cooper is in with a chance.
So many people look upon the Bugner fight as a robbery. I do n't consider itso. It was a very close fight, and a waferthin decision is always going to cause arguement. Hardly a robbery. Harry Gibbs reckoned it came down to the last round, which Bugner won. Henry was, indeed, childish for blanking Gibbs.
yes it was silly of cooper to behave like that. I saw him behave angily toward bugner during a live tv link up a good 25years or so after their fight. cooper took umbridge when bugner said he lasted 26 rounds with ali and cooper snapped "so could i if i stayed out the way and didnt try to win!" Bugner joked about henry wanting a veterans rematch but cooper did not laugh it off and it all got a bit silly. I think it let henry down because it was so long ago, I prefere to watch old foes showing a bit more respect but henry like frazier toward ali cant help himself. I think bugner suffered more over the years because of the decision, he was a 21 year old kid trying to win.
Henry's right! Bugner's "Title Shot" in Indonesia was a joke... Bugner had his big chance and played cigar store indian... Bugner doesn't have a victory even close to 'enery's Folley nod...
Apparently Joe and Henry met up again last year, and things were a lot more cordial. Just as they should be.
Hate to be a smartarse but Bugner's title shot against The Greatest took place in Malaysia. It could be argued that Henry would n't have run Joe Frazier as close as Bugner did. Frazier, without doubt, deserved the win,but Bugner pushed him all the way.
Thanks for the correction, Khuala Lampur I believe. 6/1/75. I paid money to watch it closed circuit that night and, if it wasn't for Galindez-Ahumada and Monzon-Licata, it would have been a waste of money given Bugner's no-show performance. Actually, I agree with you on a Henry-Joe; its not even an argument IMO but that's all styles. Bugner was bigger, a boxer, and catching Joe right after his humiliating 1st loss. Frazier might have been Bugner's best performance but.....in a losing cause?? I'll give Bugner this...how many fighters do you know who have an excellent chin coupled w/ no heart?
bugner beat ellis and also had the close fight with an old henry. maybe this proves ellis v cooper is close also? Somebody should ask bugner what he thinks seeing as he fought both. what do you think guys?
He beat a well-past-it, shell of Jimmy Ellis. All of Bugner's "big'' wins were over past-contenders heading downhill or over-rated wannabes...
I liked ellis but it was all down hill for him after the patterson fight. He was a force until that point, all his best wins were before this. I think cooper v urtain (who was rated) proves cooper had something left at that time. its a close call. Peak ellis has the edge. Post patterson ellis its a pick em.
Urtain was a face first ,muscle bound, slugger , he was not in Ellis's class as a boxer.Cooper jabbed his face off before he was rescued by the referee.Prime Cooper was kod without argument by Patterson. His biggest win was over Folley ,but he was stiffened in 2rds in the return.
