Anybody know why this fight didn't happen. Who do you think would have won? I'm going with Ellis on points.
They were close to fighting in the WBA heavyweight tournament in 67' but ended up with different draws. Ellis fought Leotis Martin in the opening round while Terrell was matched with Thad Spencer. Ellis went on to beat Martin while Terrell was eliminated by Spencer who was then beaten by Quarry. Had Terrell gotten by Spencer and Quarry he would have fought Ellis in the final. I would go with Ellis on pts as well. Funny, I just created a thread yesterday about this tournament and all of the possible match ups.
I would also go with Ellis on points, mostly because of his aggression. I would like to know how he would get past that long jab of Terrell's though. Terrell's stamina is also better, so who knows, maybe Terrell would win after some fits from Ellis.
Too bad it did not happen, but Ernie Terrell in 1967 was fresh off of his thrashing at the hands of Muhammad Ali at the time of the WBA Tournament. If they had fought I see Jimmy Ellis jabbing, moving and taking a unanimous decision over Ernie Terrell.
I would pick Ellis as well. Jimmy legitimately beat good fighters while Terrell either barely squeaked by his best opponents or relied on the officials to help him out.
It is so like when Terrell beat Eddie Machen on points for the WBA Title on March 5 1965, fans booed the decision.
And many felt he was gifted in the Cleveland Williams rematch and the George Chuvalo fight. Funny thing is, when Terrell fought Chuck Wepner in 1973, he felt he was robbed... Ironic how a man who got the better end of so many dubious decisions screamed bloody murder when for once it didn’t go his way...
Terrell won every round vs Wepner in 73' IT WAS 12-0, i'D GO WITH JIMMY ELLIS he beat 5 top tener's in a row. Persol, Martin, Bonavena, Quarry, and Patterson. If Wepner beat Terrell, then he also never stepped on Ali's foot with those skies, and it was a bolo punch!
I'm gonna mention Bonavena here, I'd read somewhere he was really proud of his undefeated record vs White guys, I'm not gonna get a "race war" started, I'm American indian myself, but I have however came up with some interesting matchups and not Quarry-Bonavena as I think jerry would have not only won, but score a stoppage (styles Jerry beat everyone with two left feet who came to him) so here are the matchups THIS TIME. INGO VS BONAVENA-primes 1976 BOBICK VS 1976 BONAVENA Cooper vs Bonavena- primes 1975 Bugner vs 1975 Bonavena Knoetzee vs Bonavena-primes Coetzee vs Bonavena-primes Morrison vs Bonavena primes
what are these? battles of the best white guys? Bugner vs. Chuvalo, Bonavena, and Quarry all would have been good. Oh, plus Ingo and Cooper. Chuvalo was a beast, never failed to please.
Yes, just throwing it out there (Ringo was white as chalk himself)-I'm not real Sure Bonavena was even boasting about it (read it somewhere), I would have been proud of his record too, Especially in his own country, which is probably where he should have stayed put. these are all promoter's dreams as far as that goes. William I listed 1975-76 timeline- Bugner, Bobick vs Bonavena bouts Because that would have been their best chance of winning. and may have both been slight favorites. which of course Ringo could have overturned in a heartbeat.
To be fair, Terrell certainly deserved the decision against Wepner. "Referee Harold Valan's ruling on the 12 round fight stunned the sparse crowd in Convention Hall which had watched Ernie Terrell pound the bleeding, punchless Chuck Wepner through most of the fight, billed in New Jersey as being for the American heavyweight championship. As is customary under N.J. boxing rules, the decision on the fight was made by the referee alone. Known as a cautious fighter, Terrell leaned on Wepner throughout the fight and jabbed away at cuts over Wepner's right eye and left ear. Terrell tired in the late rounds but continued to land the fight's only solid punches. The press corps unanimously scored it for Terrell, with some giving him as many as 10 of the rounds." -Associated Press Unofficial Ring magazine scorecard - 9-3 Terrell https://www.nytimes.com/1973/06/24/...ed-decision-something-rotten-compared-to.html
Ya, I resent the statement about Terrell complaining or whatever because he didn't get the decision. Evidently it was one of the wort decisions of the year. Plus, one can just think about it, a bum like Wepner is in no way gonna beat Ernie Terrell. Terrell was past it, but he knocked out Jose Luis Garcia out earlier that year, and while Garcia was not the greatest either, he was much better opponent than Wepner imo.
I would not want Valan within 4 countries of officiating lol, And thanks for your fine efforts, and research.
