So knocking down Bonavena in two rounds is the acme of being a knocker out? You don't need to stop a single first or second rater before or after that, you have already proved you can knock out anybody, requiring you just a couple of punches? I got it, thank you for explanation. Jimmy Ellis had a harder punch than Ron Lyle or Joe Frazier or George Chuvalo. Amen.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, Jerry Quarry and Floyd Patterson had much quicker hands than Roy Jones. They could throw five punches combination in as much time as it took Roy to throw two punches, not vice versa. Both were also quicker on their feet, could dance from one corner to the opposite in a blink of an eye, had by far better defense, better reflexes, better timing, sharper punchers, could fight at any range, and were never bothered by taller fighters with a good jab, including vs. southpaws. And Ellis was better than both of them at all these things.
No, what I'm saying is that Jimmy Ellis had the combination of speed, power and skill at heavyweight to catch Roy specifically, and knock him out with a single shot from either hand at any point during the championship distance, while Jones had absolutely nothing to hurt him with in return.
BS is BS. Catching Oscar Bonavena by surprise punches is a much (and I mean MUCH! as in 50 times easier) easier thing to do than catching not too old Jones the same way.
Ellis got beat up, imo at least, by an old Floyd Patterson who was about Roy's size and, at the time, significantly slower.
Respectfully disagree Red; Floyd trained like a demon for the Ellis fight, he weighed in at about 188-189 and gave a great effort, one of his best (tho he gave away too many rounds with his passivity which probably cost him the fight) In the age of multiple champs, IMO the Jones Ruiz fight was totally overrated. The RJJ nut-huggers that want to place Roy up there in mythical matchups against true past heavies simply because of Ruiz are off base IMO. He was a great MW and continued his success somewhat against LH's. But Ruiz was basically a hand-picked opponent for him, a fighter that his camp knew he had the skills to beat. Ellis vs. Jones at MW? I'd probably take Jones, Jimmy was still growing and that wasn't his true prime weight. Prime HW Ellis would have beaten a HW Jones. End of non-debate.
I'm the biggest Floyd fan in the world so I'll concede I'm biased. Anyway I was thinking of the LHW RJ who I always assumed was in the mid 180s, not the slower, bulkier Ruiz based one as the guy who I would match against Ellis.
Jones ud. Also, I don't think Patterson was much slower, but in terms of reflexes and timing Jones was in a higher league.
