Nothing too outrageous there. I think personally that Johnson is right for Louis on paper and he was unquestionably great.

The question is just Johnson's jaw, can it stand up when the inevitable happens?

I wouldn't have a penny on this fight. But it would be a privilege to see it.

Shocking that he sides with Johnson.

A great objective piece of insight.

So did Jack Blackburn .. shocking there too ? What would be shocking would be you expanding your field vision a bit ... your posts have become terribly predictable and boring ... figure I'd throw this out so you can spice them up with some personal attacks ... :nut

The Jimmy Young of The Classic Forum . Mr Negative.

It might shock you, but there may be some posters who would actually be interested in Johnston's opinion, not you of course, you are only interested in your own.

You seem to be losing your audience ,time to change your material perhaps?

Sure, because this board has such an entertaining diversity of opinion, critically analyzed and questioned with intellectual suspicion...

I actually consider this a close fight. If Pastor or Farr or Conn can make Louis uncomfortable to whatever degree, Johnson would make a very good fight of it. I do think Louis would catch him later on, but a blow-out is not in order.

I always felt in this match up Johnson would throw Joe off his game, confuse tim, tie him in knots and win a clear decision or possibly stop him ... Johnson was way too intelligent a fighter for the enormously gifted but slightly robotic Louis ...

Would be a very intriguing matchup. I'd root for Louis because of his more entertaining style. However, all too often fans pick fights based on which fighter is more impressive in terms of his offensive style, and who they want to see win, rather than which one is cleverer and more likely to actually win. You see the Trinidads and Pavliks of the world and think they will apply so much pressure and nonstop punching power, but then they get in there with a master boxer like Hopkins and suddenly they are getting dismantled.

Could Louis with his fast hands, pinpoint accuracy, brutal two-fisted power and speedy combos, and awesome finishing ability stop Johnson? Of course he could. But could Johnson confuse and befuddle him, totally outbox him, and not allow Louis to land anything significant, while landing stiff shots that Louis is unable to block or elude? Yes, that also remains a possibility.

Louis was devastating, no question but styles make fights and Joe could be both outboxed and thrown off his gear ... I don't see him out slugged but outboxed and I feel Johnson had what it took to completely take him off of his game, confuse him, rock him enough to get him on ***** street and beat him ... like Starling to Honeygan, like Hopkins to Tito, I see it pretty clearly ..

While I agree this is not an easy fight for Louis, and especially the worst version of Louis, the best version of Louis is just more proven and vastly more consistent than Johnson... even the elusive PRIME Johnson wherever that figure may have rested.

Johnson was good at overpowering smaller men and blasting bigger, less-skilled men but he faced no one, NO ONE, near as devastating and skilled as Louis.

Did Johnson ever face anyone like Louis? A quick fisted, two handed knockout puncher who was his size. McVey, maybe but Louis clearly was the better puncher.

On the other hand Louis did face a slick, skilled boxer with decent pop Johnsons size in Jersey Joe Walcott, and struggled but pulled out two wins well past his best. I think Walcott was more of a mover than Johnson but he's the closest stylistic comparison.

Which doesn't mean that he would win.
