I must confess, that even as a Welshman, my knowledge of this man and the lower weights during most periods is **** poor. I've been told there are some pretty knowledgable fellas in here and I'm keen to learn - What was his style? - What were his attributes? - What were his greatest achievements? - Always difficult, but how does he compare against modern flyweights? - Where would you rank him p4p overall, and for power? - Any stories would be interesting to hear - Any footage hanging around? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Try the search facility. There are a few pages on Jimmy in the Classic section. And I always repeat the same anecdote anyway. I too am a Welshman embarrased by my lack of knowledge about The Mighty Atom. I have his autobiography, Fighting Was My Business, but haven't read it yet. When I get the chance, I also mean to track down Jimmy's grave in Barry cemetary to pay my respects.
Wilde had a style similar to Naseem Hamed. He broke all the rules from the book, always held his hands low, but had this innate feeling of distance and time, that he'd make you miss by an inch every time, and break your rhythm. He was very slick and used weird angles for offense and was a big puncher.
I found it Foyles, London but that was many years ago. If it's in print, try amazon. If it's out of print, the single greatest source for secondhand books on the planet is www.abebooks.co.uk (or abebooks.com if in the US) even if it's not there when you try, keep trying, and it'll turn up eventually. I have found some ancient and obscure books from abebooks that I had almost given up hope of ever locating. You also may get lucky on ebay...
