Yes, boxing fans, it's that time again...it's time for a look at my man,....the master of negative defensive magic...The Uncrowned Heavyweight Champion,...the always unappreciated ...... This content is protected
Always liked Jimmy Young. Was giving Norton fits in their bout. I have to say that when Foreman went sort-of-like down he was totally exhausted, and not taking anything away from Jimmy, but he caught George as he was turning away. If Young had been a few years younger, he would have handled Big Gerry till the end and come out with a UD. The fact was, Jimmy was fairly well spent at the time of this fight and C00ney was young, hungry and up for it. I would love to see Jimmys fights with Shavers, especially the draw he should have won.
Home early today Red; not sure how to send you a private message; school me. I knew we were boxing 'soul buds' when 7 or 8 out of ten of our favorite fighters were the same. Jimmy Young! In his short wheelhouse of prime he would have given any heavy major problems! Lyle? IMHO had they fought 100 times in their prime Jimmy would have run the table! OK, one bad pre-meal indigestion or an under the weather moment; might have went 100-0 anyway. Won big bucks on the Foreman fight; despite Foreman's still recovering mentally from the Ali fight, I thought he had the 'tool's' to take George. Norton? Damn those judges out there that score negatively towards counterpunchers. A bit of years difference but Jimmy would have been all wrong for Quarry. Granted two counterpunchers but, IMO, Jerry would have tried to force the action knowing Jimmy couldn't really hurt him and would have tasted big counters all night. As I've previously said: Jimmy didn't hit HARD but...he hit hard enough to stop the big boys in their tracks. In the glorious 70's landscape of heavies, Young was, truly, a force to be reckoned with! My $0.02
Go to "Inbox" bud...I think you'll have to enter my name as the poster you want to have a conversation with...and you're on your way!
I sure agree with you there jowcol,....Young was special...and short of Joe Frazier, would have been a nightmare for damned near all of the 70's greats...and other eras as well.
If Young and Shavers had fought again, just a few short years later, I believe that Jimmy would have shut him out...yes, shut him out.
nice video cobra! Uncrowned champ for sure! And put to music makes it SO COOL to watch. IDK, he just had such slick skills. Unlike anyone else
I disliked him ,a nearly man who wouldn't go the extra mile, and did not possess a champions mentality. He made me physically sick watching him put his upper body outside the ring to escape a woefully out of shape Ali's punches. There's a reason he lost so many close ones, he didnt have what it took to close the show imo. I saw him school John L Gardner in London, he even dropped him ,but he turned me off in most fights . I feel the same way about Chris Byrd ,but at least he didn't put himself half out of the ring in a fight . Each to their own.
There are fighters who are,...shall we say, ..a bit polarizing....whether it be for reasons that McVey lists, related to style, aesthetics, performance, or other reasons, pertaining to "personality", image, etc.,...a case in point is Floyd Mayweather ("Floyd" is Patterson, not Mayweather), whom I despise...really despise. I won't take part in, i.e., post in a thread pertaining to him, unless he's in that thread peripherally, along with many other fighters. In any rate, I still won't mention him, or reference any of his fights, attributes,...anything. There are a few others as well, like Nasim Hamed...that I loath, for many reasons....so I can relate to McVey completely in his dislike for Jimmy Young. We all, as boxing fans here in this forum, have fighters we either like of dislike, to one degree or another. I created this thread mainly for the Jimmy Young fans in our midst. For anyone who isn't a fan, I'll just keep my mouth shut and avoid the temptation to defend, or debate Young in any way. I agree fully with McVey (one of the best posters here) in many, many areas, but apparently we disagree about Young...and I'll just leave it at that.
Excellent post. I feel the same way about some fighters. I just dislike some to the point where I don't want to get involved or I may just throw in a quick two cents and never even go back. To each his own. No one will ever get me to see anything great in the likes of Primo or Johnson just like others don't get what I see in the likes of Frazier and Mancini as some examples.
