Dempsey and Marciano sometimes employed questionable tactics, but they were trying to win at the time, not avoid punishment.Young had his chance against a past it, unfocused, fat Ali and he blew it because he wasn't prepared to go the extra mile. Not my kind of fighter.

Young didn't deserve the win, he was an underperformer in several fights. He had his chance and he didn't take it .Move on.

Muhammad Ali has always been my favourite boxer of all time but he was sure lucky getting the nod over Young in that fight. Jimmy's best performance and victory, though, was against George Foreman.

he didn't blow it, the judges did. I know most people like the balls to the wall aggressive fighter, that's cool, others like a crafty boxer, he did put it all on the line, in the way he chose to box. How can u say a guy who was in with the best heavys of all time and even made his loses close and disputable didn't put it on the line?

I agree. A teeny bit more more mentally and he really would have been something. As it was he was an excellent fighter bit i agree he would have won more with that bit more x factor. He probably had the tools.

He didnt go for it,that what I mean and he was in there with a fat, in decline unfocused champ. I like and appreciate all styles and I saw Young fight Gardner in the UK.The reason his losses were close is precisely because he wasn't prepared to go the extra mile and put victory beyond doubt when a bit more endeavour might have achieved it.Just my opinion.. ps. I scored it for Ali,**** though he was

But does that excuse Dempsey's tactics? He's on record as saying he'd skirt the rules if the referee didn't see it. Marciano? He 'low blowed, elbowed, etc. opponents on several occasions. IMO Jimmy was trying to win too, and it wasn't illegal at the time as far as I know.
Counter punchers always get the short end of the stick in close fights.

Marciano was a dirty ****er no doubt about it. Dempsey was less so, he took advantage of the ."in the event of a kd" rule not being enforced and profited from it until the Tunney Long Count. His opponents could have done the same but first they had to knock him down!

You ain't trying to win when you are putting your head and upper body outside the ropes, leaving no legal target for your opponent to hit,you are avoiding fighting!
I would warn him once then deduct a point a couple of times, after that sling him out .The public pay to see two fighters give of their best, if one of them is avoiding fighting by sticking the top half,[the hittable part] of his body outside the ring he ain't." giving of his best",he is defrauding the public that have paid to see him!

I'd just like to take a second to dismiss any claims that Jimmy Young wasn't trying to win this fight.

Juan Manuel Marquez and Lara are prime examples of this in modern times

When he intentionally put his upper torso out of the ring that is precisely what he was doing.
