Two fighters who are poles apart stylewise but the one thing thay had in common was that they could make better fighters than themselves look bad. I back Jimmy to score a close decision with his more accurate punching but it would be very close.
Great match up Stevie. I’m guessing very close either way - the other alternative being that Oscar is possibly that bit too awkward, bullish and overbearing for Jimmy to keep Ringo’s own scoring punches sufficiently capped for Jimmy’s less accented but more accurate volume to eclipse it.
Jimmy Young by a close decision in a rather ugly fight generated by Oscar Bonavena's roughhouse tactics like low blows and attempted head butting, not to mention wrestling tactics. Young was a super defensive counterpuncher spends some of the rounds sticking half of his body outside the ropes when Oscar attempts to bullrush him.
Oscar for me- he cut it a lot closer than he was supposed to with Ali. Jimmy Young was a great uncle but not a great fighter.
I mean Bonavena cut it close with Ali for a lot of the reasons I think he would with Young. They didn’t give him a deterrent worth thinking about and he was too dumb to not cause them problems if that makes sense. Being unintelligent was his asset similar to a certain fighter who upset Robinson…
Knowing Oscar's temperament,he'd probably tip Jimmy out of the ring if the latter stuck his torso out of it!
Good point Rich - I almost forgot about Young's own version of the Rope a Dope. If he tried it on against Bonavena, I could guess that Ringo would call him a "Loco Chicken" then follow that with clucking sounds.
