I think Young stops a gased cooney late in the fight. A prime young wouldn't have got hit like he dud and he definitely would land great counter combinations on the head and when in close he would pound the body of cooney.
A lopesided decision is also possible but I see a stoppage as a better pick

Young basically dosen't get hit vs prime Cooney...frustrates him to death...a late stoppage isn't out of order here..hell, Cooney couldn't hurt Young, much less deck him or stop him..
Prime Young would make a fool out of him. Yes, JImmy's counters would have hurt and surprised Cooney as well.

Prime Cooney couldn't hurt an old, blind Jimmy Young...cut him yes, but hurt him? Prime Young would make Gerry look pathetic.

Young takes Gerry into deep water late and stops him around the ninth round.

gerry takes this one by kayo gerry has a good left hook arsenal that is very effective against fighters who tend to have a lazy jab as young has:think

Although Gerry had gotten off to his usual fast start when they fought, his power wasn't bothering Jimmy, and it looked like things were going Young's way when the long right which tore open his face suddenly changed everything. I'm not convinced that a rematch between Cooney and 1981's Comeback Fighter or the Year would have been any sure thing for Gerry.

Prime for prime, Young has speed, stamina, skill and durability over Cooney. This might look similar to Young-Lyle II.

Bull****. For one Gerry couldn't KO a shot young. For 2 Young never had a lazy jab. It's called a rangefinder/light jab.

Young proved he could hang with the best. Gerry never did. He proved he could SURVIVE with Holmes for 10 rounds.

I still favor 1980 to 1982 Cooney boy to beat Jimmy Young of 1976 in a time machine... Cooney looks to be too big, tall and powerful for the slippery Young... Young was actually in good shape for Cooney, but still got ripped to shreds... Cooney's pawing jab was actually pretty effective when he popped it out there...

    Note:

Young's cut of '80 and Klit's cut of '03 are two of the WORST cuts I've seen on a top dog in a big fight on TV... Only Bobby Chacon can compare in that sense....

Young wasn't getting dominated before the cut. The only reason he really lost was because of the cut. Cooney couldn't hurt Young like Foreman or shavers did.

He was just not in the same shape he was for his previous bouts. I also think some of his reflexes faded with age.

He basically didn't care as much after losing to Norton..I've seen Cooney-Young plenty of times..he NEVER dominated or really hurt Young at all..yes, it was a very bad cut..and a 65% Jimmy Young still was right there in front of him, ignoring the same shots that laid out Lyle and Norton.
