While theres allways the chance of a KO for Gerry vs. Anybidy, I think Young would beat him, and probably by KO, or TKO. And if he didn't get cut when they fought, I see the same result, dec. or KO or TKO for Young. Young was doing good in their fight, and I thought coming on. Guys like Cooney were made for Young.

Cooney would have to hit him first to cut him, deck him, etc., and that's just it...he wouldn't hit him..Young would be like a ghost.

Yes. A prime Young wouldn't have got nailed like that. And I truly think that cut was truly unlucky for Young.

I don't think an old Jimmy Young would get cut in a rematch, or even 10 rematches. The cut was just bad luck. Taking nothing away from Cooney, I don't beleive in lucky punches, he through it, and it cut him. Probably never happen again.

I agree with the thread starter. Also if anything Young stunned Conney a few times in 3rd and 4th rounds. A prime Young takes this quite easily.

He sure did. Young's chin was always iron. Cooney's wasn't glass but still not very good at all. Young stunned him with body shots and a right lead to the head.

Young struggled against some mediocre fighters even in his "prime". I know Young was well on the downside by the time he fought Cooney, but hell, he was just 32 years old. It's not like he needed a walker to get in the ring. I see Cooney taking this one by decision for some reason, if not by stoppage. People degrading Cooney's power are simply in denial. Some of the best trainers of the attest to the guy's tremendous power.

I don't think anyone can deny Cooney's awsome power, his problem would be he'd be fighting a guy he wouldn't be able to land on much, if at all. To make matters worse, if he did land cleanly, Young would shrug it off. Also, I think back then, 32 was considered old for a fighter, I know back in the 50s,60s, you had some guys pushing 50, but around Young's time, I think he was one of the few older guys.

  13. the version of young who fought foreman and ali, would beat prime cooney any day of the week. by ud probably

And so did Cooney. Lets face it. Young wasn't doing bad up the stoppage. the young that beat Norton would smoke Cooney with combinations.

I don't see Cooney ever winning this by stoppage. That cut was very very unlucky for young.

:lol:I'm.....I'm sorry I had to laugh at that. Young by decision in a schooling. even past his prime he was making Cooney look bad before the cut then he couldn't see anything. I can't see anything but a Young decision by a wide margin but it is boxing, anything can happen.
