he was a slick spoiler, though i don't put him on tony tubbs level. he was in the league of a shot ali, norton, shavers and lyle though and fared well in the twilight years of the golden era. young had SOME pop but not much. i just don't see a guy who is in there just to survive being able to beat a prime dempsey

BTW: this is jim rockford, at the tone, leave your name and number

I can see Jimmy going the distance, but taking a lot of punishment towards the end. Dempsey would've had his moments of frustration,as nobody looks good beating Young.

When Jack was in his prime Jimmy would have been made to order for him. In a serious fight, scheduled for 10, 12, or 15 rounds, Jack would win by mid rounds stoppage...and would be ahead on points at the time...in my opinion.

Young has boxing skills that could outbox Dempsey to a decision. Dempsey nostalgics will say its insane to think Young could beat their man and cite Dempsey being the far greater fighter. But Young arguably beat 3 men better than anyone Dempsey even stepped in the ring with and is tricky style for Dempsey.

I won't make a pick but I would say the more modern rules would favour Young, if you pardon the pun.

How is Jimmy made to order for Dempsey, when the man who twice dominated him had a style just like Young's?

Is Jimmy Young particularly like Gene Tunney?

I dont see it myself beyond the fact that they were both defensive technicians.

Yes, there are very similar. There will always be differences between fighters of course. Outside of Ali, how many top heavyweights between Dempsey and Young were similar to Tunney in style? You can count them on one hand.

Young was extremely illusive and only stopped on two occasions in career, both of which coming either before or after his prime had been reached. I don't have a problem with calling him one of the more difficult fighters of all time to stop, nor one of the hardest to outbox. I don't see Dempsey doing to Young what he did to Firpo, Willard or Miske. Jack may end up going the distance in this one, and weather or not he wins or loses will depend on how disenchanted the crowd and judges are with Jimmy's boring style..

Young would have been a very difficult match up for Dempsey ... he was just a slippery, trick SOB ... Dempsey at his best would have out punched him enough to take a decision but he would not look impressive ...

I would not say Tunney and Young were that alike other than they were both boxers ... Tunney was faster, Tunney hit far harder, Tunney was better conditioned and threw far more punches ..

I think that Young was fairly one dimensional compared to Tunney.

A better comparison might be a more durable but less powerfull version of Fred Fulton.

I think the power and speed and relentlessness of Dempsey would allow him to overcome Young's tricky defensive style, I think Young presents a problem and makes the fight uncomfortable but Dempsey comes out victorious because of Jimmy's lack of power

    That's pretty much a bullseye.
