I don't see how some of you see a prime version of Frazier only getting a UD over Young.

Prime version of Frazier hunts down Young and destroys him. It would not go to the cards.

I could be swayed, but destroys??? Not so sure?

Young was only stopped twice, once in his 11th fight against Shavers and as a 42 y/o fighting Cooney....in between goes 15 w/ Ali goes the distance with Shavers a second time, Lyle x's 2, Foreman, Norton...even in his faded late career he goes the distance with Dokes, Page, Tubbs & Tucker....Young is not a guy who is an easy out....Could joe stop him??? Sure, but I am not convinced it is the logical or most likely outcome.

I'm talking the Frazier of '68-'70. That version was awesome, imo.

I just don't see Jimmy holding off such a relentless force for 15 rounds.

Do the slick moves hold up when Frazier keeps coming and coming and forces Young to fight three minutes a round?

Would Young hold up under the body shots? Does he have anywhere near the power to hold off Joe?

I see Joe imposing his will on Young and the end coming pretty rapidly once Frazier really smells blood.

It goes 9 or 10, imo.

You may have surpassed me as the biggest Frazier proponent on this forumn. I think that 68-71 Frazier is the greatest H2H HW force ever....and I could see him stopping Young, but again Young might have been good enough to go the distance (and that would likely be my pick unless frazier catches him in the early stages as Shavers did)....I hope you are right, but we will never know for certain!

    I agree.

Young is slick but when your a pitbulll like Frazier and he zeroes in on the body he could break Young down. I think the styles favoer Joe Frazier. He`s not going to try to box with Young and give him the room and time he needs to be effective.

    Interesting.

I knew Holmes and Norton sparred with Joe but not Young but it makes sense.

Frazier was notorious for beating the **** out of sparring partners (Holmes mentioned getting his ribcage hammered in sparring by him though Larry was only a young buck and Joe near prime) not out of malice or meaness (unlike Dempsey) but because he only knew one way to fight.

No wonder Jimmy had such great survival instincts when he cut his teeth with Joe Frazier trying to knock him out.

Well, Joe is a bad matchup for Jimmy. But then again, didn't everyone think he'd get his ass kicked against shavers2, Lyle, cooney(only cause a cut, did well otherwise, at 32, not 42), and foreman. A busy guy is bad for Jimmy, especially one like Joe, with pressure and power. I see Jimmy lasting the distance almost for shure, and if there's a guy who could befuddle Joe, it would be Jimmy, I'd go with my man Jimmy, I think he could beat anyone when he was on his game

The Frazier of Manilla would have had enough of his greatness left to beat the prime Young of 1975-77,by hard fought but convincing decision or even a late tko. In 1976,however,it would have been a different story. Joe had virtually nothing left after Manilla, and Jimmy would have won on the cards.

Horrible style match-up for Jimmy. Frazier outworks him to get a clear-cut decision.

Re: Frazier in Manilla, bear in mind that was Frazier fighting in ridiculous and dangerous sauna conditions.

Ali and Frazier would probably have felt cooler had they been fighting in a furnace !

Kurgan, would n't you give Jimmy a decent shot at a post Manilla Frazier ?

1981 Frazier? Sure. 1976? Hard to say. Frazier fought so differently in his second fight against Foreman that it's just about impossible to say what he'd have been like against Jimmy. Assuming he was at least as depleted as Ali after Manilla, I agree that Jimmy deserves decent odds. I still think Jimmy would lose, in particular because Frazier was nightmarish to counterpunch agaisnt since he'd plough on if he missed and throw some most shots; Ali managed it by planting his feet and hitting Frazier with some of his hardest ever shots to get his respect, and it was still hellish for him in Manilla. Jimmy can't (or won't) do that.

The Frazier of '75 Manila would chase the April '76 narrow ass of Jimmy Young right outta the ring..... Styles make fights.... The 230 pound Ali was FORCED to attack the defensive Young during their professional sparring match on ABC-TV in '76, otherwise, no action at all would've occured... Frazier's style of applying pressure while hooking upstairs and downstairs would be the difference to Young's pitty-pat countering, etc.... Frazier beats Young via a mid-70s time machine....

I'm convinced that Joe would have been outpointed by Young in '76. Manilla killed Frazier as a top fighter.

So you think Mr. Young would be sticking more than just his head outside the ropes against Mr. Frazier, huh?

    I agree. :good :yep

Frazier and Ali were both fine in Manila prior to the opening bell.... That's the Frazier I'm pitting against Young.... Young on the other hand is awaiting the opening bell against Ali in '76.... Frazier wins....
