Peak Joe is the worst possible match-up for a slickster without a punch. Ellis will happily tell you that.

Young does well to last 15.

Young was one of Frazier's sparring partners in the early 70's. In fact he still was for Frazier's rematch with Ali in 1974.

Jimmy would have fared the worst against Frazier..the nonstop pressure..the windmill, churning, constant ripsnorting offensive output of Frazier...plus the danger of that everpresent scythe of a left hook would have kept my man Jimmy in a survival mode all night long. Finally, of all possible styles, this one is the worst for Young..Frazier would be his kryptonite...and the only hope for Young to survive through 15..taking into account his excellent chin, would be to ape Bonavena a bit and cover up well, and counter effectively..open wide the bag of his many survivalist tricks and spoil his way to the final bell.

All these fights would have been feathers in Young's cap..all would be routinely outboxed...wish these fights had been made, as they would have greatly fleshed out Jimmy Young's legacy. None of these names would have been a problem for him..Shavers especially..a third fight with Shavers would have been like Young-Lyle II.

All those fights would be winnable, but not easy marks.
If they were 10-Rounders, all could be possible defeats.

Bu nobody is putting Jimmy out.

Joe's stronger workrate gives him a unanimous decision, possible late round stoppage over Jimmy.

How many rounds are they fighting?

Young could squeak out a SD 10 rd fight.

Frazier wins at 12 or 15 easily.

My, my...what a lively discourse! Boxed Ears is a hilarious and talented writer...I give him that, gladly. I don't agree with him that it's a "silly" match-up, but I can't say it's all that relevant either.

George Foreman, Ron Lyle, and Earnie Shavers are what used to be known as "stand-up punchers", highly dangerous but not particularly crafty in their attacks.

Frazier is a different animal, a swarmer, bobber/weaver type. He throws a high volume and wears you out through accumulated pain and exhaustion.

I think Il Duce is right on the money when he compares this to Frazier-Ellis. Jimmy would frustrate Joe for a few rounds, but I can't see a guy of questionable mental toughness lasting the distance, much less beating, the Joe Frazier who mauled Muhammed Ali for 15 rounds in '71. It's the wrong style for Young, as others noted, and Joe's will to win is so much stronger. Most likely a sustained beating for Young, that's all.

Frazier was different animal then the slow punchers like Lyle,Foreman etc., Frazier was a pressure fighter wrong style for Jimmy because Joe was active and went to the body and head well, still Jimmy would be competitive and land his share of punches on Joe, however Young did not have the power to hurt Joe...Frazier by a close UD over 12 and could get a ref stop (hard to do over Young) over 15 or a close UD

This is not a mismatch for several reasons. Yes, most would favor Frazier in this match-up but to me Young has that Philly heart and skill to make this fight very compeative. Young, fought and drew with Shavers who hit just as hard if not harder than Frazier as well as Foreman, Lyle and Norton. I don't think Frazier could take out Young with one powerful shot. I like this match-up I have to got with Frazier by a close UD.
