This is a weird matchup, since it really shouldn't be close at all in hindsight. However, Young was an extremely effective, albeit underwhelming, fighter. Joe appeared to struggle with fighters that employed movement and awkwardness, so how would Young do here?
Young could quite feasibly last the distance with Louis, and make him look bad at times but would lose a fairly wide decision. Joe would ultimately be too busy and hard hitting.
Young def. could last the distance in all possibility. If he did, I'd imagine it taking all his defensive measures to do so - leaving even less attention to his already limited offense. It would be interesting to see Joe's technically perfect offense vs Young's proven defense. Not to be cliched, but I think Joe would catch up with Jimmy, behind a steady, powerful jab with due attention to both head and body. I know Shavers still managed to drop Young hard in the fourth round of their rematch, and if memory serves me correctly, it was with a body shot. Anybody's guess but I'll throw up a 9th to 10th round KO/Stoppage by Joe.
Could Jimmy pull off an upset and beat Joe? Very unlikely but I bet Louis doesn't want to meet him in a rematch. As Stevie says, Louis too busy for him but a frustrating in parts fight imo.
Jimmy Young was a fighter you would want to avoid, but still Joe Louis would prevail in a very interesting fight...
Jimmy Young. Jimmy Young. Jimmy Young. What is it with Classic and Jimmy Young? Jimmy Young boxed for 20 years, and he was good for about two years out of those 20 years. The rest of the time, he was average to often bad. As opposed to Joe Louis, who boxed for nearly 20 years and was pretty much great until about the end. How would Jimmy Young vs. Joe Louis go? Probably like Jimmy Young-Gerry Cooney, only it ends quicker, with Young beaten to a pulp. Jimmy Young wasn't better than Joe Louis at anything. If Ossie Ocasio can beat you not once but twice, so can Joe Louis.
No he was obviously great in rematch s, so was Ali but I bet he didn't want to see Young ever again..
Jimmy Young was a wild card type fighter. He didn’t achieve greatness in my book but he had a way of making great fighters look unimpressive and on some occasions even upset them. While Louis is leagues better than young, Jimmy might be the type of guy who could upset him or at the very least give him a very frustrating evening
In all fairness Ocasio beat Jimmy when he was on the way downhill. We'e talking PRIME Young circa 1975-77.
In all fairness, Jimmy Young was 29 when Ocasio beat him. And, in all fairness, Jimmy Young wasn't above average for about 18 of his 21 years as a pro. Too many excuses to make for Jimmy Young. Hell, I didn't even think he clearly beat Jody Ballard in his so-called "prime." In fact, his "10-round decision win" over Joe "King" Roman during his "prime" on the Ali-Coopman undercard was considered so boring and terrible that I don't know if all of it stuck to film. Joe Louis "in his prime" beats any version of Jimmy Young to a pulp. Jimmy Young wasn't much of a "mover," as someone described him. He was just a sparring partner who went on a pretty surprising run for a couple years, and was consistently mediocre before and after that during his two-decade career. Brief runs like that have happened before. They'll happen again.
Louis would demolish Young- how is this a question? He looked good against guys like Foreman because that’s not the impossible task Ali convinced you it was.
He beat Foreman and I had him beating Ali. But Ali didn’t know how to lead and was a little pudgy for that bout. Louis destroys Young, to busy to accurate. to good of stamina.
