Baer figured out Schaaf and Farr. Perhaps it's unfair to say he figures out Jimmy the first go around so I'll say he losses the first bout by decision and then either decisions or TKOs Young. Young's tactic would be to slip whatever Baer threw at him, step in, clinch, throw weak flurries and then wait for the referee to split them, rinse and repeat. Maybe it would work so it's a pick em for me but I'll go with Baer, I figure he had enough stamina and power to replicate Shaver's two time success against Young.
"Two time success" is a bit disingenuous when referring to Shavers' encounters with him. He beat Young the first time when Jimmy was incredibly green (The Acorn was 42 - 2 and The Fox was 7 - 3), and though the second was ruled as a draw, any reports I've heard of regarding the fight have called it a gift for Earnie.
Ali stank horribly but I think it was a 5- to 7-point fight. I thought that when I saw it in real time and I haven’t changed my mind, and I am not being an Ali fanboy. I think people are so swayed by the fact that Ali stank and should have been retired and ignore the fact that Young didn’t do anything to take the title away from him, and I am quite aware of the total punch stats which I consider to be irrelevant in this case. I’d have scored the rounds where Young ducked through the ropes 10-8.
My bad, I forgot the second was a Draw. Nonetheless it's not a good look for a so called master boxer to draw with Shavers of all people, so I'll still use it to prop up Baer.
This is the best version of Max Baer, correct? Not the Baer who lost to Jimmy Braddock. And, of course, the best version of Jimmy Young. I will go with Max Baer.
I wouldn't exactly call him a master boxer at that time. I feel as if it's worse for Shavers to draw against a guy that's 13-4.
There was room for improvement then, the Lyle and Foreman wins were yet to come. Which is why I'm tentative picking the winner.
I understand , why would;d the fact that Young landed one hundred punches than Ali mattered ? Ali stunk that night but he stunk because of Young, a very tricky, talented cutie with fast hands, an outstanding defense and chin. The same guy that beat Foreman, Lyle, lost a decision to Norton that cold have went either way as well ... Young would have made Max Baer look like a clown and at 6' 2" and 210 or so was about the same size as Baer as well.
Whatever. As noted I didn’t think much of Young then and I don’t now. We’ll have to agree to disagree.
I'd go with Jimmy Young--too crafty--he would neutralize Baer's power and use all the tricks--(clinches, effective counters, etc.) to turn the fight into a kind of a sleepy "technical" bout which was Young's signature MO.
If it’s the best Baer he is aggressive enough and certainly dangerous enough to keep Young on the defensive. Baer wins rounds with that aggression and Young’s defensive posture. W15 for Baer.
