Jimmy Young vs Michael Dokes Highlights

Thanks. I always thought this fight could've gone either way but felt Young should've won. I still feel that way.

 

Young sucked.

 

Dokes was lean and fast back in 1979 / '80.... Dokes even looked fit at 216 as he was for Weaver in 1982... Too bad Dokes couldn't maintain his eye of the tiger after winning the WBA title.... That 223 he weighed for the rematch of '83 told the story...

Young looks reasonably fit for a dude age 31 in this fight, but he is a little soft and has some tits on him...

jimmy young was a great,smart, skilled and underrated stylist.
in my mind he did beat ali, norton and shavers

 

young 76 would have beat dokes for sure

 

Nice video, and I like the music with it too. Also love to see Jimmy pushing him down in the corner and then just standing there. Would have been cool if they started getting into it right there.

 

I still say the judges got it right back in '76 against Ali... The fight was a sparring match at best, but that doesn't negate the fact that Jim Young really didn't come to take the title away from Ali.... Ali was a hefty 230 for the event, but as defending champion, Ali had the easier task of merely holding his own and keeping the title... WORD!

P.S.

Many feel "Ali-Young" was a robbery in favor of Ali, but Spinks retaining his IBF title against Holmes in '86 was way worse and stinky...

It was dull... I have a clean copy of the fight on disc..... Prez. Ford's son was ringside.....

This was the fight that got me hooked on boxing....... I was age 9 and saw the fight live on ABC TV with my folks in April of '76... At the time, cuz it starred Ali, I thought it was the greatest thing since the Mexican invented the tortilla.....

Ali being the defending champion should have NOTHING to do with him keeping the title, c'mon, I know you're more knoledgeable than that, I've read a lot of you're posts. And it was no sparring match, it was a young gut being safe, doing what he thought he needed to win a championship fight. A lot of guys get screwed trying the same thing, because there not a box office draw, it hurts to see this happen to them I thought it was a good fight, interesting, a guy using his smarts, and skills. And you're right, Holmes got screwed big time. That fight wasn't even close. It was an ass kicking. I'm surprised Holmes didn't kill someone when the dec was announced.

I found out a LONG time ago that boxing is a BIDNESS and not a sport....... Fights / Matches are made cuz of the revenue it will gross... How else can you explain comebacking old farts getting title shots off the bat or after one or two tune up bouts.?.? Truly earning a title shots means very little in business... Therefore, the "House" fighter will generally get the benefit of the doubt in a close encounter...

Back in '76, no way in hell was Jimmy Young gonna get Ali's crown based on his slippery and passive showing against an outta shape Ali.... Ali was the money man of the 1970s......

In my book, Ali looked slow and sluggish, but Young was too timid and passive.... Again, Ali keeps the title......

Larry Holmes was butt-reamed against Spinks in 1986..... I WAS PISSED!!
