Cooney was actually 238 lb when he faced Spinks. Gerry was also less than ideally active career wise and gun shy during the fight. Of course Holmes was well past his best but arguably won the rematch and still hurt Spinks badly with a single, later round punch. In a nut shell, Spinks wasn’t a natural HW, had some good wins against compromised “name”opponents but didn’t have much exposure to the division otherwise before facing Tyson. Michael only ranged from about 199 lb v Holmes first time around to about 212 max. v Tyson, his last fight.
