Naw, Naw.... People always claim Young gets sold short by historians, but so does McCall....... Both guys have or had issues in their careers, but McCall has been more consistant and successfull overall... And, McCall has aged way more gracefully despite the fact he likes Coke on his off time.... I'm kinda' stoked... I just recently found my "McCall-Maskaev" blow-out from circa--'96.... MR.BILL:bbb:deal
How would McCall present more of a threat to the defensively masterful Young than the far superior and more powerful and menacing George Foreman that Young fought in San Juan?
McCall is too a wicked right hand puncher and he throws good punches that are accurate.... Foreman of the 70s threw everything wide and a dude like Young had a knack for seeing through that type of attack... Yeah, Young beat a mentally ill Foreman down in Rico back '77, but, I think Foreman could've beaten Young in a rematch had they fought elsewhere and with a newfound attitude... Even Gil Clancy wasn't happy with Foreman's training for Young... Foreman was learning tricks and dirty tactics from some other jackass that Clancy didn't like at all... I just think a motivated McCall with the right coaching from the corner would work over the weaker, but slippery Young... I remember when Young announced a comeback around 1982 at age 34, and Young barely made a Dent before the losses started piling up.... Young finished ugly and he wasn't even age 40.... McCall is 46 and still beating non-mobile dude's who can slug... McCall at age 46 is still strong and powerful, but he cannot chase anymore... Though he can still stalk / hunt down a mother****er in the ring.... MR.BILL
Mccall has never been busy enough...that's always been one of his deficits...Young would have made him miss all night..and would have easily discouraged the less purposeful McCall, who'e never been too strong in the head department.
Foreman was mentally ill only because he was made to look stupid and then was decked in the last round as an exclamation point to a masterful showing by Young. Complaining about the heat never did cut it, as Young was subjected to the same temperature as I recall.
Ollie would have broken down in uncontrollable sobs after being frustrated out of his livin' mind all night by Young.
The knockdown of Foreman by Young in round 12 was hazy / sloppy.... Foreman was tired in the high heat of Rico and was also partially off-balance, as well.... That was not a clean knockdown in my book, but Young got an extra point cuz of it.... MR.BILL
Yeah, Foreman got hit by a right from Young, but Foreman was a wee bit off-balance and also tired.... Foreman wasn't dropped from power in rd. 12 from Jimmy boy... Young used some skill, savvy while turning Foreman into position and let loose that caught and momentarily dropped Foreman to a knee..... Not a clean knockdown... MR.BILL
You obviously didn't watch his fights with Ferguson , Seldon & Douglas when he was relatively less damaged by d crack and was faster than in other fights that i saw him in .
Of course ! Some on here forget that Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Young also had to accomodate the hot conditions in Kinshasa and San Juan.
Stevie G, it always makes me think of Joey Maxim's quote after his tko of SRR.."what do they think I had an air conditioner in there?"
