Right.. I wish. I wonder how many of his losses actually should have gone his way because of crooked judges. Impossible to know, I guess.

Red, were you surpised at how many often Young had Lyle against the ropes and had him hurt? I was shocked the first time I saw that.

Yes I was...in youngs first fight with Lyle...so I hear..or read, he kept on the go alot and won on speed as well as skill...but in that rematch...he stands his ground and really rattles Lyl;e at times....very impressive....all the naysayers of Young should give it a watch..

He was beating Lyle more decisively than Ali was. Given, Ali stopped him and Young didn't, but he was actually winning. Lyle was outpointing Ali. I love the way Young evades Lyle's punches in this fight. Bounces off the ropes, dodges punches within inches. If he had more performances like this on film he would be like the heavyweight Willie Pep tbh.

Lets remember that Lyle did catch Young a few times, nailed him with a left hook and a straight right.. Those bodyshots looked good for the most part, too.

Aside from getting fed to the wolves in his 11th pro bout vs Shavers...Jimmy Young never had much trouble showing a great chin...I think the crucible for him was vs Foreman in the 7th.....but he handily took whatever Lyle managed to land without any trouble......and yes.....great observation tommygun....Young beat Lyle much easier than Ali...he overall just dominated a very dangerous opponent in Ron Lyle.

I agree. Foreman and Shavers are both great punchers, some argue they are the eras's greatest punchers. Foreman stunned him bad in the 7th,

Young definitely looked better against Lyle than Ali did, but maybe Lyle was more focused/motivated against Ali? I think that's definitely an argument to be made.

It's really funny to see Young pinning Lyle against the ropes and bullying him.

he really had his way wih Lyle...and i can imagine the color commentator George Foreman thinking.."oh ****...Young's winning this thing big"....although I think George was just as confident of blowing away Young,I'm sure he would have rather have fought Lyle again...even after hitting the deck twice like he did the first time. No one really enjoyed the prospect of fighting Jimmy Young...Ali included.

It's funny that you mention george.. He said "The moment Lyle hits young, this is over". That happened multiple times and Young didn't go anywhere. Foreman's respect for Lyle is at an all time high here, lol

Young in his prime vs Cooney.. Young schools him imo.

Even the Young that lost by tko to Cooney would have schooled him had it not been for that awful cut...watch the fight...Jimmy was right there in front of him....and never got hurt.

I'm gonna have to check my film, I thought he was hurt at least once. He ate so many left hooks. I'm not too sure if he was fit to fight Cooney that night.

Although older, he was fit to fight cooney. I remember the fight being postponed and Jimmy saying good, gives me more time to train. jimmy seemed very focused, right in front of gerrie, not as much in and out, but right there, slipping/countering, and leading. He may have realized at this point he needed to be RIGHT IN THERE, not just sporadicly to get a dec win. Its so sad he got that cut, I think he was on his way to a great win. I think jimmy hits MUCH harder than people give him credit for. Seems to me every time he through with conviction, he hurt, Ali, Lyle, Norton, ets, were stunned many times from his shots. Maybe just me, but by time he fought Gerrie, I think he was in there to be much more in his face, aggressive, and had he got his chance, I think would have gone for the KO. Did better against Lyle than Ali did, from what I hear, beat Shavers second time, Shavers made Ali his *****, I think he won big, can't believe Ernie didn't get the dec.

Being almos impossibleto hit solidly and having an iron chin made Jimmy Young a cinch to beat guys like Foreman and Lyle...I think he would have upset Liston as well. He would have frustrated the life out of Liston.

I also think that comparisons between Young and Chris Byrd are ridiculous...sure Byrd was fast and threw more punches...vedry fast punches too...but he was not as slipperyand commitied to defense as Jimmy Young was...and he would have gotten beheaded by George Foreman...the version that Young beat...and on the other hand, Young would have easily decisioned Ibeabuchi...chew on that.

Beating Liston? That would be hard to accomplish for Young, Liston was a real boxer in his prime. He wasn't a Lyle, Foreman or Shavers type. I think the key is that Machen gave Liston tons of trouble, and Young probably would have lost the fight a similar way.

Good post. I'm not too sure he could knock out or stop Gerry. It would've been great if that happened though.

I think a decision over Gerry would have been more likely...had it not been for that cut.
