Jimmy Young vs. Roy Jones Jr. in heavyweight division, who wins?

I give Roy a very good chance of out working Young

 

Young if he's not a coward

 

Roy clowns him, probably drops him, on the way to a clear cut decision.

 

Young doesn't have the power to drop Roy, he'll be in with a fighter faster and more elusive than himself. If it's the Ruiz Jones then I don't see much of a chance for Young, esp in a 12 rounder.

 

Young matches up decently here. He has fast hands, excellent timing and is slippery in the pocket. I think he has the power to get Jones attention despite the paucity of stoppages on his record. I'd favor Young, the only worry is if he gets a bit passive but he showed against Norton he could play the role of aggressor for periods. I'd favor him by decision.

 

The bigger worry in a decision bout---especially with Young in this match---is follow the money. And that is a huge advantage for Jones here. Young is just not going to dominate rounds. More like do a little better. But not clearly winning 7 rounds. And he'd need to clearly win 7 or 8 rounds in this.

 

RJJ on points this is probably one of the best Heavyweights RJJ could beat in their prime.

Young is a slippery very smart boxer but he's not aggressive and he has mediocre punching power.

Young does his best work when he makes his opponents lead where he can counter punch. But the issue here is he would have to lead against a speedster like RJJ and that's a stylistic problem for him.

RJJ would beat him to the punch with his superior handspeed. And Young would simply be a step behind in the exchanges and he's not aggressive enough to unravel RJJ.

 

Jones might actually be the only fighter who young faces who is faster than he is. And Jimmy didn’t have much power to threaten jones with. Also if it goes the distance which it most likely will, a lot of judges didn’t seem to like Young’s style. I’m leaning towards Roy Jones by a close decision

 

True enough Zad, Jimmy was hardly a hyped up excitement machine with heavy backing.

 

The version of Roy who beat John Ruiz for the title would certainly beat Young. I'm not sure why Young gets so much praise for beating Lyle and Foreman who were slow plodders. He arguably beat an aging Ali as well, but Young lost to much lesser fighters than Roy and he wasn't a big puncher. Young could take a good punch, his advantage would be his chin, height and defense, but Roy has a clear advantage in speed, reflexes, and pedigree.

 

Definitely Jimmy.

 

It would be a good fight but Prime Roy was just too skilled/Athletic. He likely gets Jimmy out of there or a wide DEC with a few potentially scary moments for Roy

 

Whoever you pick, I don’t know that Jones’ performance vs Ruiz is the fight to necessarily base it on. Ruiz was no boxer and his strengths otherwise were nullified by the referee. As I recall, it was a pretty low punch output fight also.
