Well, definatley a tougher fight than Sam Peter, thats for shure. And Sonny had that badass jab. But I think Young would deal with that, duck it, and end up being the guy with the jab, he had a real good one. And he did have some power, he didn't follow up when he rocked someone. He rocked Foreman, Ali, and others, but you know his style, he'd just keep doing what he was doing usial;ly. I'd say Young UD, and a very good possability of KDs and a KO for Young.

SO! Let me get this straight...... Jimmy Young can out-box Liston based on his skills and average punching power, but Vitali Klit will fall to Liston.?.?

Just noticed this thread Tommygun...veeeerryyy interesting IMO..I think Young may have flummoxed Sonny and bedeviled him more than Machen ever did..and I've always been an admirer of Eddie's defiant, yet losing stand vs Sonny. Young was far more gifted than Machen and was the master of creative negativity..I think Jimmy would have upset Liston..by decision of course.

Young was far more elusive ... Young had a much better chin ... Young had much better stamina ... Young would not get busted up nearly as easily by Liston's own jab ... it's a different fight ...

I love Young; based on his brief window of prime IMO I would have him in a good scrap with a number of HOF heavies throughout the decades.
That being said, he fought the post-Ali Foreman...big difference.
I think a prime pre-Ali Foreman would stop Jimmy.
Liston a better boxer than Foreman. Not a good matchup for Jimmy.
Machen avoided conflict with Sonny as Jimmy would have.
Either a boring one-sided decision for Liston or a stoppage.
    No other outcome...

Yeah, young Ali, 34 years old and 230lbs,when Young was 34, he was losing to Philllip Brown and Pat Cuillo.
Young was the poster boy for negativity, he stunk out more rings than a skunk.
He had the World Title in his grasp, but did not have the nuts to go for it.

Liston by decision or mid to late stoppage...But it's Liston.

There are those stories out there of Harold Johnson doing very very well against Liston in sparring. And that Machen bout & the boxer style of Whitehurst were not the styles that suited Sonny the best. Let alone Cassius Clay. Move away from Sonny and pick and peck & never trade.

That said, I think a boxer like the 76/77 version of Young has a nice shot at the upset here. He'll slip the Liston jab and nobody is landing an uppercut from the outside on a prime Young. That leaves lefthook and right hands and I think that sneaky straight right hand of Young lands easier on Liston than the Liston punches land on Young. Scores the points. Especially as rounds go on and Sonny's hands drop and he falls for feints. I just think Jimmy would be effective with that great attribute he had at that time of looking like he's giving an opponent an opening from the outside and then just taking it away once the punch got launched. And then Young would pepper away and he was real accurate whenever he did that. And, of course, Young would then slip out of harms way after he connected. Very frustrating guy to fight & I think Sonny could definately drop a decision here.

...Young by knockout over Liston? Is this in that thread of outrageous predictions?

if young lands that overhand right he landed on foreman then he's going to KO Liston. young was known for his devestating punching power and he showed it against foreman and Richard dunn.
besides i'm pretty sure that young hits harder then Marshall and Martin

?? Like a lot of scenarios with Jimmy among the all time greats,I can see him surviving till the final bell with Sonny. Young would have his moments, but he would n't have the firepower needed to beat Liston.

How many fights of Marty Marshall's have you seen to make this assessment ?

Marshall had 18 wins prior to meeting Liston 11 of them stoppages.

Young's ko % is under 20% in comparison. Chrys Byrd , a noted light hitter, has 46%

Check out Leotis Martin v Thad Spencer, and Sonny Banks ,[who died after sustaining a beating from Martin]
.Factor in Liston was 38, going on 40 something ,when Martin stopped him, [Sonny ran out of gas].
The punch that dropped Foreman was increased in its effect because Foreman was coming into the punch.Young was out on his feet in this fight and stated ,"George could have blown me over with a feather."
Young was clever ,but passive ,he stunk out arenas.

    I disagree ..

Chin ... Young by a mile

Defense ... Young by a mile .. don't mistake Wlad's size for defense .. he can be hit and busts up easily ... Liston's 80 plus inch reach and jab would rip him to pieces ...

    Handspeed .. Young no question

    Footwork ... Young again.

This is in a match up of either v.s. Liston ... Wlad had the skills and style to thrash Young head to head like he did Bryd ..
