Wow, this thread is a dream come true! It has everything I look for in a thread....Jimmy Young, Troll fights, same old tired debates! It's great to be alive!

Anyway, Jimmy Young is kind of a mystery man, that's the truth. For a period of about 18 months he looked like he might be able to outbox everyone in his division, and then Ken Norton squeaked by him and he went into a horrible malaise and was never the same, becoming the Boo Radley of the heavyweights. During that brief window, Young was very, very good and showed the potential of being great. And then it totally evaporated, leaving us confused for thirty years afterwards. It was like "The Mothman Prophecies", where you think you've seen something, then it's gone, and afterwards you're not sure of what you actually saw.
As we all know, success in boxing is as much mental as it is physical, and that's where Jimmy was lacking. He didn't handle discouragment well...lots of us don't. And so he stopped training so hard, and let himself waste away. Frankly, he was rather tragic, especially how he ended up dying. What makes Young so hard to assess also, is this: everyone is worse post-prime, but Young for some reason was way way worse than he used to be, almost a different fighter.
Forgive me for being more poetic -I realize I'm not ranting, use the word '****', or making threats on this post, and that this is unmanly- but I would say that Jimmy Young was a haunting figure, a ghost who came from nowhere with something like a 17-4-2 record to extend Ali, beat Lyle and Foreman, and almost beat Norton, and then vanished.
And on clear nights, if you really, really BELIEVE, you can still see him dancing and circling in the eastern sky.

 

I've started to accept young is a bit overrated Around here as much as I like the guy he wasn't that consistent

ANYONE who can quote ogre ****ing battle (from the brilliant queen 2, right before two of queen's most brilliant and theatrical songs ever) is amongst my favourite posters. well played sir. and **** jimmy young haters (and jimmy young for that matter)

 

Young was very good, nothing more and nothing less. His inconsistency plagues his career more than anything and yes some calls should've went his way(Occasio 1, Norton, Ali, Shavers 2) but he had himself to blame for losing about 10 fights in a row and just not being active enough in rounds many times.
