A great fighter who holds wins over foreman, lyle, garcia and a draw with shavers(should of been a win} was robbed out of his wins against ali and norton. Young had no amature boxing experience and didnt start boxing til 18 i think. Cant believe young is not in the hall of fame

His chin was unbelievable. One of the worst cuts of the 80's against Cooney on top of refusing to go down after absorbing shot after shot after shot from a man who knocked out Norton (Nearly killing him, literally) and breaking Lyle's ribs in one as well.

Cooney was just ****ing teeing off on him, and wasn't nearly as large a guy as either Lyle or Norton.

His only stoppage was when he was a green amateur against the hardest hitting HW of all time.

Awesome defensive skills + iron chin = rare combination.

"Earnie Shavers, 210, Warren, Ohio, ran into a tiger in Jimmy Young, 197, Philadelphia. Shavers had stopped Young in an earlier meeting and for a couple of rounds last night it looked like he might repeat. Young was down in the 4th from a vicious left hook but got up and weathered the storm. In the 5th, Young started coming. He blasted Shavers with both hands and in the last two rounds it looked like Earnie might go at any moment. The majority of those at ringside felt Young was a handy winner but the verdict was a draw. Referee Joe Cecchini gave his vote to Shavers, 46-45, while one judge saw it for Young 47-44 and the other judge had it even at 47 points each." -Cumberland Evening Times

I rate Young as the best heavyweight in the '70s after Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Frazier, and Norton.

Is this fight on film? I've never seen either of the Young-Shavers bouts.

How can you rank Young below Shavers when Shavers lost to basically every ranked opponent he ever fought?

had no amature experience but still beat a 3 and 0 national golden gloves heavyweight champion on his first fight, got a draw with shavers which should of been a win, got robbed and of wins against the greatest ali and norton, beat foreman, beat the avoided garcia and beat lyle, won the ring comeback award and was involved in the ring fight of the year with foreman. Sorrie about the spelling, i didnt get much schooling
