...The Vilomar Fernandez of the heavyweights. You see what I mean right?

Never thought of that comparison, but, yes, I see what you're saying.

Two real cuties who no one ever looked good against, and who were capable of beating even the highest caliber opponents on their best nights.

My man, the Master of Creative Negativity..Jimmy Young. A good comparison to Vilomar, except I think Jimmy was even slicker, and with a better chin.

I'm only gonna make one post on this thread, that is to point out that cobra was like a worse version of Byrd.

Let me get this straight,...You're suggesting that Young is a"worse version of Byrd"?

That's right...and Jimmy Young did just that, with the obligatory curse of getting screwed on two occasions.

Jimmy was a very good fighter. Shame about how quickly he deteriorated after the Ken Norton fight. He was a handful for anyone.

Stevie, a man can get screwed over one time too many.

Jimmy Young was a good fighter, for sure, but certain fighters were always going to have their way with him.Shame that he couldn't have fought a Leon Spinks, or possibly Mike Weaver, he could've have beaten them.

The king of the nullifiers. The other managers sure knew who he was and what paydays they could expect. So they signed another contract, and wouldn't you?

There was no way the Spinks camp was putting their guy in with Young. At least not until 81 or 82 and Leon wasn't the same by then either. Leon couldn't solve Scott Ledoux and Jimmy was on a different planet than that.

Everyone wanted a Mike Weaver fight. He was beatable. But he also had a habit of rising to an occasion and was certainly a guy capable of an upset. but 77 or 78 Young is all wrong for the guy fighting the Stan Ward's in the division.

Perhaps if he'd have had a promoter like DKP or Arum excited about him, he could have made a big payday going to South Africa and taking on the K-man or Coetzee.

Or maybe Jimmy could have got the Bobick fight instead on Norton way back. If memory serves, there was brief talk back then but lots of fights in that timeframe were talked about and very very few came to fruition.

Vilomar is one of my favorites too! I love a guy who's slick, not the big hyped up pop star, who can ruin that guys night. I just watched Young/Ocossio1 a cple weeks ago. Got news for you, Young won that fight. I don't know why the hell he was ripped off so many times, its a shame.

A guy can stand just so many times getting screwed over till he just mentally starts to decline as a fighter. That was just a ghost of Jimmy Young standing there in front of Gerry ****ey with blood pouring from his eyes.
First of all, he was screwed over in the Ali fight...i just watched again the other day....he was fighting Ali, Don King, the paid off officials and all the other nut-hugging Ali worshippers having anything to do with the fight. Then he was similarly screwed over in the Norton fight,.....for all the same reasons. An inferior like Ocassio gets the nod next....I think a guy can just think "screw it" after that.

I agree. I watched the ali fight too recently, no way ali won, no way. A shame he got cut against ****ey though. I would have given him the win over Dokes too

Young, in the 13th, I think it was, even aped Ali's style and made it look even better than when Norton did the same in their 3rd bout. Robbery...sheer robbery vs Ali.
