Young was better than Ali when he was in shape. He gave Ali and Foreman thorough boxing lessons. Norton gave him a better fight that Ali or Foreman, but Young beat him also, in spite of the crooked judging. The robbery against Ali was criminal. He lacked a big punch and had problems with discipline, but at his best he was better than Ali.
He gave Foreman nothing. Young was in to survive. Foreman was just exhausted trying to get to a whining Young.
hookandjab, well said! Jimmy was the man! Don't forget, He was smaller, not as quick, not a bug punch. So how did he do it? Take away ali's size, speed and power, what do you have, not much. Although, Jimmy's punch was better than most people think.
Young fought a totally defensive fight against Foreman. On the other hand, Ali fought defensively yet punished George the whole fight. Young did nothing to George. George basically did himself in by not only battling the fatigue from not being acclimated with the climate of San Juan, but also not realizing he was getting nowhere with the survival tactics Young was employing.
Who was landing right hand counters in there, the ref? Somebody was. And Foreman started falling for feints on the outside after that and Foreman is not that good out of the seek and destry mode compared to playing the feinting game on the outside. Another big thing was footwork. Foreman was absolutely tremendous at cutting off the ring on guys. Nobody better. But Young just slid over. Slid, not dance and certainly not use much energy doing it. Beautiful. He didn't try getting 2 feet away, he did the tightrope act getting an inch or 2 away.
