2 razor close decision losses to Ali and Norton, a win over Foreman, 2 wins over Lyle and a draw with Shavers. That's quite an incredible run against the best contemporaries around. Young might be the most overlooked fighter of the era, all things considered. Discuss.
Yes he was special in his prime. Not a hard hitter, but great skills. Too bad he lost so many fights later in his career
I don't think it was as much timing as anticipation. I wouldn't say his counterpunching was that good because his speed and power kinda meant he couldn't make the opponent pay once they missed. But his timing and anticipation was top notch. Shame his athleticism let him down.
If he hadn't stuck his head outside the ropes....Young could have won the Ali fight. Basically neutralized Ali via boxing skills, not "power".
Overlooked? Word for word I doubt any other fighter of his level has had more text written about him on this forum.
Young was often described at the time as a cutie, a guy it was very hard to look good against .. Ali was in terrible shape against him and the fight was a stinker. I'll eventually watch it against w fresh eyes but have not been bored enough to do so .. the Norton fight was a fight I scored for Ken but like all Young fights it felt inconclusive .. Jimmy looked is best against Lyle, a bit old and slow .. I was always shocked Foreman's people let George fight Jimmy based on styles but they did and the rest is history ... Young was to the most dedicated guy as he let himself get out of shape and lost back to back decisions to the pesky Ocassio and he never came back ..
My man Jimmy Young should have been crowned champion vs Ali,...deserved the Norton fight by at least 8-7,..defeated and retired Young Foreman, twice totally outclassed Lyle, and had he not been screwed over by those myopic judges, would have gone on to fight Shavers again...and would have set the record straight with the Acorn by outclassing, maybe even shutting out Earnie in a title defense.
If Ali had used that tactic...sticking his head through the ropes, everybody would be oozing superlatives about his "creative genius" in that fight.
right on cobra, I've said the same thing, Ali would have been a genious had he employed the head through rope tactic. As far as ocassio and Dokes, I thought Jimmy won those fights. Norton and Ali too! For a guy who was small, not a KO puncher, Or the fastest boxer, he sure did pretty damn good for himself against the best era of heavyweights!
