I don't rate active fighters, because that's unfair. That being said, he's likely a lock for the Top 10, and definitely worthy of consideration for the Top 5 once he retires.

he's in the running. not there yet but certainly top 10. not that long ago, after morales 3, there were talks about barrera surpassing chavez. i agree that chavez/sanchez/olivares and company are in rightfully in high esteem but comparing resumes, marquez isn't that far off

Chavez was more versatile than JMM........Watch Chavez vs Ramirez...you can see a great counter-puncher in this fight....just one example.....
IIRC against Lockridge he was great using a style similar to JMM....

JCC combinations are up there with the best of all time, between SRR, Duran, etc....

    Wait...what?

JCC was better defensively at his best than JMM has ever been. JMM eats his share of punches in each fight, though he seems to be getting a bit more savvy at defending in recent fights.

And JCC's punches were just as compact, precise, and well timed as JMM's. They just didn't have quite the same flow that JMM has when thrown in combination.

JMM is a technician. But so was JCC. No questions asked.

Chavez is as skilled...Marquez does some things better but overall there ain't much in it.

I don't understand why people think otherwise..it's right there to see.

Resume - Pacquiao x3, Barerra, Mayweather 3 weights above, John, Casamayor, Diaz x2 (whom he ruined), Katsidis, Juarez

Outside of the grossly unfair Mayweather fight, Marquez arguably won them all

i've gotten hammered for this before, but who are the best 10 opponents chavez fought? what's his record against them?

    tszyu
    oscar
    whitaker
    taylor
    camacho
    ramirez
    rosario
    laporte
    randall
    haugen

    Record: 7-5
What's his record against other HOFers: 0-4

He was past his prime for all his fights against oscar, tszyu, and whitaker but it still stands that he lost, clearly, to all 3. compare his record to marquez's? I wonder how it'll fare

rosario and posssssibly comacho are hall of famers

but yeah. could beat a lot of top 15 contenders and not much else except struggle against guys who where well adept. frankie randall is a good technician and all but the guy was already passed his best and coming back from a delicious crack habit i think there is nothing to suggest that other 130-140 mexican fighters wouldn't be able to outpoint him.

this is not to take away from chavez's accomplishments, longevity and obvious skills. but against the very best, he struggled. past his best to be sure but if you examine his resume, his best prime wins were rosario, ramirez and the controversial taylor fight. on an all time scale, that's not too impressive

Only fighters Marquez arguably beats on that list is an aging Haugen and Laporte, which would be a 50-50 fight.

He would get brutalised by Oscar, Tszyu, Randall, Rosario and boxed silly by Whitaker, Taylor and even an old Camacho would probably embarrass him.

    Based on what?

Being put on the seat of his pants in every fight he's ever contested?

Cluelessly following the likes of Chris John and a shot Casamayor around the ring?

    Being out-countered by little Hags?

Being out-combo'ed by a legless Barrera?

Those saying 'JMM IS MORE SKILLED THAN CHAVEZ' have never watched Chavez....seriously painful reading.

And no, JMM isn't as great as Canto, Sanchez, Chavez....although he's far greater than the most overrated fighter of all time, Ricardo Lopez.

Mong. That accolade is shared between Floyd Mayweather and Ricardo Lopez.
